The Spectrum Program is a unique program designed to create educational options and interventions, within a regular school environment, for students that meet the diagnostic criteria specified in the revised DSM-5 for Autism Spectrum Disorder; formally categorized as Asperger’s Syndrome or High Functioning Autism. The program targets academically capable students diagnosed with ASD and takes a fresh approach to addressing their needs by both: a) including them in neurotypical academic classes and campus activities, and b) providing concentrated, daily focus on improving our students’ social and real-world functioning skills within the specialized Spectrum Life Skills Program. The Spectrum Program offers the following accommodations: extended time on tests, extended time on large projects, and preferential seating at the front of the room. Our main goal is to provide support to our students in developing executive functioning skills, organization, time management, calendaring, and self advocacy these life skills can be translated into students’ everyday lives and beyond graduation.
The job of a Spectrum teacher is as unique as the program itself. Responsibilities include:
Direct classroom teaching (student: teacher ratio 6:1) in the Spectrum classroom 3 periods/day with a Co-Spectrum teacher
Coordination with academic teachers concerning the progress, accommodations/specific needs of each Spectrum student within the academic classroom
Teach, support and encourage time management and calendaring skills within the academic and social lives of our students
Ensure that Spectrum students are aware of their homework assignments, due dates and the time it will take to complete each assignment
Daily communications with parents and other support providers
Monthly parent meetings to review both the academic and social aspects of the student
Learning and teaching the Spectrum Program Curriculum including collaborating with the Co-Spectrum teacher for field trips, lesson plans and Spectrum events
One-to-one work with Spectrum students during students’ individual free periods to assist with executive functioning, academic reinforcement, informal “counseling” for both social and academic situations
Must have 3+ years teaching experience.
Must possess patience, creativity, solid communication skills, strong IT skills and an ability to work as part of a team.
Special Education experience and/or credentials are a plus.
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university required.
Ability to work with a diverse community of students, parents, and faculty.
Ability to think quickly in high pressure situations.
