Established in 1920, Bentley School is a K-12 coeducational, independent day school located on two campuses in Oakland (K-8) and Lafayette (9-12), CA. Bentley seeks a Humanities Teacher to teach Middle School at the campus located in Oakland.
The sixth grade Humanities program emphasizes the fundamental skills that prepare students to read challenging material, develop an extensive vocabulary, write fluently, and utilize strategies for comprehension and analysis in reading and writing. Students are exposed to a wide range of culturally diverse materials drawn from classical and contemporary canons. The program encourages critical thinking skills, such as planning and organization, persevering in problem solving, analysis, and discussion.
Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
Plan and teach Humanities - English and History - with a goal of developing foundational skills in reading and writing as well as historical content knowledge spanning Ancient Rome to the start of the Renaissance
Lead an advisory group
Accompany students on a grade-level trip
Participate in many aspects of faculty and student life at Bentley
Contribute to curriculum development and pedagogy
Attend faculty meetings
Participate in the admissions process
Attend school events
Collaborate with the Upper and Lower School History and English faculty
Proctor study hall and various supervisory duties during select recess and/or lunch periods
Advanced degree in English, History or Comparative Literature, or related educational field
A desire to work with young people
A passion for working with a vibrant teaching community
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Experience in course design, planning, and implementation
Experience working with middle or high school students in an academic setting
