Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Special Education Teacher for The Douglass Outreach Program. This position reports to the Assistant Director. The Special Education Teacher coordinates educational and behavioral programming for Pre-School students with developmental disabilities, specifically autism, enrolled at the Douglass Developmental Disabilities Center;
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Trains and supervises university undergraduate practicum students.
Works with families of the students who attend the DDDC.
Coordinates inter-department activities as related to educational and behavioral assessment, intervention and transition for a particular group.
Develops Individualized Educational Plans.
Responsible for Skill Assessment (using a variety of assessment materials), Goal Planning (based on the assessment information), Program Writing (documentation of procedures employed to achieve outcomes).
Oversees incorporating skill assessment, goal planning, and well-designed programs.
Provides analysis, and well developed and documented specialized interventions.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a bachelor's degree in education; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
A valid NJ Teacher K-6 certification (including CE/CEAS).
A minimum of 2 years directly related experience working with individuals with autism, behavioral technology, data management, goal assessment and planning, family programming, and paraprofessional supervision.
Also requires having a Teacher of the Handicapped Certification or Teacher of Students with Disabilities endorsement/CE/CEAS, as outlined by the New Jersey Department of Education Office of Licensing and Credentials.
Teachers who do not meet DOE requirements, but who are eligible under IDEA flexibility rules, will have a maximum of 2 years to complete requirements as outlined by the NJDOE.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and be willing to travel, when necessary, to sites throughout New Jersey for business demands.
Effective communication skills and computer literacy
Effective, proficient oral and written communication skills
Knowledge of Advanced Behavioral Technology
Knowledge of Advanced Behavioral Technology, research, and an understanding of DDDC's research and mentoring models are desired, and Master's degree preferred.
Computers: Word Processing, Data Base, Spread Sheets, and graphing software Commercially made educational materials (i.e., Handwriting Without Tears, Edmark Reading, Reading Mastery, etc.)
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Employee must be physically active and be on feet most of the day.
Duties may involve running and playing active games with individuals with autism (ages 3 1/2 – 21 years or adults), driving vans or other vehicles.
Following training must be physically capable of safely providing crisis management techniques including restraining, lifting, blocking individuals with challenging behavior.
Moderately noisy conditions with children, adolescents, adults, and staff moving about.
In accordance with state-mandated requirements, a Mantoux test will be administered to successful applicants to verify the absence of tuberculosis.
In addition, the successful applicant, at the cost of the university, will be required to be inoculated against Hepatitis B, unless the successful applicant waives this vaccination in writing.
