Reports to: Head of School/Superintendent, Principal of Upper School
Supervises: College Counselors, College Counseling Office Manager, College Counseling Assistant, Testing Coordinator
Overall Function: To administer a comprehensive college counseling program for the entire school community.
Essential Functions of the Position:
Student Counseling. Counsel students individually on the college search and application process, including self-exploration, goal-setting, self-advocacy, and application review.
Counselor Recommendation Writing. Oversee and participate in the process for writing comprehensive and creative counselor letters of recommendation for the senior class.
Constituency Education. Educate parents, students, faculty, administrators, and trustees regarding all aspects of the college application process.
Office Leadership. Mentor and lead the College Counseling office staff. Lead curricular and strategic planning of the College Counseling Office in alignment with the mission and educational goals of the school.
Relationship Building. Consult regularly with college admissions representatives on current practices and admissions trends and to advocate on behalf of student applicants through phone conversations, email interactions, attendance at conferences, participation in visitation programs, and hosting college admissions representatives on campus. Establish long-term professional relationships with key admissions personnel at colleges and universities in the US and around the world.
Standardized Testing Programming. Administer four-year standardized testing program as well as standardized test preparation programming.
Professional Development. Pursue opportunities for professional growth and school exposure through participation in professional organizations such as the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), the International Association for College Admission Counseling (International ACAC), the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), The College Board, the ACT, Naviance, and the like.
Budget Management. Oversee annual review and proposal process as well as implementation of annual budget.
Community Partnership. Work collaboratively with faculty and staff to implement college counseling programming and to work closely with the Upper School administrative team while also effectively integrating into the life of the community through various other duties and responsibilities.
