The Lower School Division Director is a member of the school’s Leadership Team and reports to the Assistant Head of School for Academic Affairs. The Division Director is on the Head of School’s One School Leadership Council and as such carries significant weight on school-wide decisions. Maclay School is a family of believers in measuring the school against the best schools in the southeast. Maclay School is not satisfied with being the best Independent School in Tallahassee. We will always seek to be at a level where the school could be relocated to other large metropolitan areas and be highly competitive with other great Independent Schools there. The Lower School Director carries the responsibility of making his/her division able to make that promise. Continual improvement is a minimum standard, and a bias toward action is expected.
The Lower School Division Director is a champion for his/her students and teachers. As the face of the Lower School, he/she has an infectious positive attitude and inspires learning at every level. Chief vocalist of the Lower School, he/she is well versed in every corner of the curriculum and is eager to explain to and convert any skeptic that our way is the best way for Maclay students.
The Lower School Division Director is responsible for supervising the development, coordination and implementation of a challenging curriculum in a nurturing environment. The Division Director is to guide and assist teachers as they differentiate within the subject areas to ensure that the needs of all students are being met as effectively as possible.
The Lower School Division Director is responsible for delivering a challenging and responsive academic program, for shaping positive behavior, for promoting honor, and for cultivating leadership in the Lower School at Maclay. This dynamic leader manages the day-to-day operation of the Lower School. The primary responsibilities of the Lower School Division Director are to create a vision that is consistent with the culture of Maclay and communicate a vision for a Lower School that will help students mature and become responsible and productive members of our global community.
He/she shall serve primarily as the educational leader of the Lower School and work with his/her team to lead and oversee discipline, counseling, and wellness systems and be a resource for students, faculty, and parents. The Lower School Division Director will be responsible for proactive and consistent observing, supervising, and evaluating the faculty in the teaching process. The Director shall cultivate a character of empathy among all students and will manage and assist the Lower School faculty in the carrying out of the curricular and community vision for the school.
EXPERIENCES AND QUALIFICATIONS
The next Lower School Division Director should have successful teaching, administrative, and leadership experience.
The ideal candidate will bring a collaborative leadership style, expert communication and listening Skills, and adeptness in relationship-building. The new Lower School Division Director will need to be involved in the daily life of Maclay, and to serve as a persuasive and welcoming ambassador in all areas of school life. Preference will be given to sitting Division Directors with specific experience in differentiated instructional practices, curricular experience in writing and/or mathematics, managing different learning styles, and individualized professional development.
QUALITIES AND CHARACTERISTICS SOUGHT
Candidate should have a minimum of 10 years experience in a Lower School setting in the form of teaching or administrative experience.
Ideal candidate must have a Masters in Education.
Lifetime learner as evidenced by advanced degrees.
Exceptional oral and written communication skills that have contributed to building program success, spirit, and community.
Proven administrative leadership skills managing a complex environment as evidenced by professionalism, integrity, credibility, visibility, collaboration, humility, and high standards.
Intellectual leadership and demonstrated exploration of new educational opportunities that advance the appropriate use of technology.
Effective stewardship of institutional assets, including staff, budgets and facilities.
Experience with, and an eagerness to engage, in outreach efforts to other divisions, parents and students outside of their classroom experience.

About Maclay School
Maclay School is a private, independent, non-sectarian college preparatory school located on 100 beautiful acres in northeast Leon County, Florida, about ten miles north of the state capitol building. It is dedicated to providing a liberal arts education, enabling each student to develop the inherent ability to the fullest extent with a balance of discipline and freedom. A group of parents founded the school in 1968 naming it in memory of Alfred B. Maclay, Jr., a World War II veteran whose mother was a major benefactor. The 2016-17 school year will be the 49th year for Maclay, now under the leadership of James Milford who is in his third year as Head of School.
