Girard College seeks an experienced Long Term Substitute 6th Grade Homeroom Teacher beginning immediately and lasting until early November 2018. Our teacher will need to implement developmentally appropriate curriculum and instruction, aligned to Common Core State Standards. This position concentrates on the teaching of Math and works collaboratively with the other 6th Grade Homeroom Teacher as well as the residential staff responsible for 6th Grade students. They must encourage our students to be actively engaged in the learning process, and to live Girard’s Mission and the core values: Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Self-Discipline and Compassion. The position reports directly to the Elementary/Middle School Academic Dean.
The Teacher must be able to:
Create a positive learning community within the classroom that acknowledges and respects children’s social and emotional interactions, as well as the needs and gifts of each individual while teaching how to become a caring and engaged member of the group
Teach a comprehensive literacy program approach, including all elements of best practices for math
Teach math curriculums where students learn how to read information and use critical thinking in research and projects.
Differentiate instruction when needed to meet the needs of a variety of students with different learning styles as well as areas of strength and weakness.
Conduct parent-teacher conferences and work to promote constructive home-school communication
Use assessment and evaluation tools to guide instructional decisions; maintain accurate, up-to-date records and communicate results in a timely manner with regard to student progress and performance
Perform professional duties efficiently as assigned by the Elementary/Middle School Academic Dean, manage resources effectively and meet deadlines and meeting schedules set by the School.
Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, preference given to specialization/ certification in Math and/or Master’s degree.
PA Teaching Certification required
Previous experience teaching or working with students with a range of needs and abilities, preferred urban education experience; an understanding of child development, preferred knowledge of Responsive Classroom techniques
Experience/ability to integrate technology into instruction.
Proven ability to work collaboratively with all members of the community
Consistently strong recommendations from previous employers and others.
Preferred - some competencies in a wide range of areas supportive of student learning e.g. coaching, club leadership, the arts.
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
Local candidates preferred as there is no relocation reimbursement available
