Perform high level machine work involving the design, fabrication, assembly, and/or modification of specialized equipment and/or precision instruments of great variety. Enter program information into MasterCam software to operate various Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machinery and standard machine shop equipment including lathes, mills, drills, grinders, electro-discharge machine (EDM), waterjet, and hand tools.
Fabricate, modify and assemble and specialized equipment and prototypes from special templates, fixtures, specialized equipment and research prototypes to complete university researcher's custom requests.
Produce parts to industry standards including close, tight-tolerance parts. Perform manual dexterity work within close tolerances of special shapes. Utilize blue prints, graphs, drawings, diagrams and sketches to produce finished product.Participate in the functional design and fabrication of scientific apparatus for research, frequently from verbal instruction, sketches, detailed blueprints or written instruction at the lowest possible cost to the customer and in a timely manner.
Conceptualize and frequently design from rough concept drawings and verbal instruction, tooling and fixtures related to the basic design of the apparatus. Functional design is characterized by specific details as to component relationships, sizes, fits, shapes and materials that are not provided, but rather developed as fabrication progresses.
Provide consultation on material selection, necessary tolerances and other related matters.
Observe and adhere to shop practices and procedures and machining principles with regard to safety and operation instructions as well as standard and special machine tools.
Follow established safety procedures regarding the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Maintain a functional awareness of the typical hazards of the work place as well as the special hazards that may be encountered at UC San Diego. Follow established procedures for dealing with such potential hazards.
Assist in resolving questions regarding services performed. Refer customer inquiries or complaints to supervisor. Respond directly to customer requests in supervisor's absence.
Coordinate equipment repairs and shutdowns with campus customers to avoid disruption of research or service.
Communicate effectively with people of many diverse backgrounds including students, staff, faculty, and customers.

Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and Eight Years of experience in general machine shop work, tool and die making or instrument making; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience using Mastercam CNC software for Lathe programming and operation.
Experience working with trade materials, with in-depth understanding of material properties, use and application including but not limited to aluminum, plastics, copper, stainless steel, titanium and brass.
Demonstrated experience working within standard safety practices common to machine shops including machinery principles and special machine tools, metallurgy and shop measuring devices, and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Demonstrated experience participating in the functional design of a variety of instruments and equipment in a large scale commercial or higher education environment. Ability to demonstrate originality and ingenuity required to solve fabrication, assembly, installation and related problems. Ability to research and resolve problems independently.
Demonstrated high degree of comprehension of machine shop customer's needs and an understanding of the restrictions of the test environment in which the equipment will be operated.
