Position Overview                                                         Essential Employee

The Director of Upper School (grades 9-12) is an integral part of the senior level administrative team, responsible for the daily operations and decorum of the Upper School division and, in partnership with the Assistant Head, the development and implementation of the academic, extracurricular, and athletic programs within the framework of the school’s mission statement and goals.  The Director is actively involved in all aspects of the school’s programs.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Divisional Responsibilities

• Maintain congruency between the school’s board-approved mission statement and all activities of that division. 
• Serve as the educational leader of the school division, responsible for its day-to-day operation; direct the activities of the members of the school instructional staff and, in conjunction with the Chief Business Officer, the non-instructional staff in the performance of their duties.
• Provide an environment in which learning can take place and a school climate which is supportive and which reflects high morale. 
• Jointly develop a vision and identity for the Upper School which is developmentally appropriate and which fits into the sequence of an all girls’ grade 6-12 community. 
• Orchestrate the hiring process within the Upper School division. Meet with Department Heads and the Associate Head of School regarding the qualifications desired in new hires. The Director of Upper School will meet with the Head of School regarding concept development of new positions and will coordinate with the Associate Head regarding the search process. The Director of Upper School will propose final candidates to the Head of School and the Associate Head of School. The Head of School will make final decisions.
• Meet regularly with the Upper School faculty and create meaningful, productive agendas that further the needs of the school and the professional needs of its teachers. 
• Hold responsibility for maintenance and use of his/her division’s facilities.
• Be a visible presence in all areas of the school; work toward a resolution of all problems (both routine and unique) as they arise; and keep the Head of School informed of the general programs, activities, and concerns of the division. 
• Assist in the admission process during the testing, interviewing, and evaluating of applicants for enrollment. 
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School. 
• Support the school and its leadership.

Collaboration

• Work with the Curriculum Team in the articulation of department goals, course objectives, materials, methods, and means of assessment.
• In conjunction with the Class Deans and Director of Middle School, coordinate the co-curricular and extra-curricular activity programs of the upper school, assist in the planning and the presentation of school assemblies and programs, assist in maintaining a comprehensive calendar of school events, and keep the entire school community informed of various school programs and activities.
• In conjunction with the Class Deans and Director of Middle School, establish guidelines for proper student conduct and dress, maintain student discipline consonant with school policies, monitor students’ adherence to established school rules, and maintain accurate records of student attendance and citizenship. 
• In consultation with the Head of School, Associate Head of School, and Director of Middle School, evaluate the existing faculty structure and develop and enhance as needed to lead, manage, and carry out the division’s needs.
• Partner with the Associate Head of School and Registrar to prepare a master class schedule and to assign teachers and students to classes and other obligations. 
• Serve as a consultant to teachers in matters of classroom management, teaching methods, and general school procedures. 
• Be responsible for the handling of all major disciplinary matters involving upper school students in collaboration with the Class Deans.
• Establish programs for the orientation of new teachers in collaboration with the Director of Middle School and Associate Head of School for in-service training of upper school teachers and for the evaluation of classroom teachers and ensure that teachers are familiar with and adhere to school policies in all areas of the school’s operation. 

Supervision and Instructional Leadership

• Observe, supervise, and help evaluate the upper school faculty in the development and implementation of curriculum, supervise the teaching process within the upper school, and review and evaluate the academic programs. 
• Develop positive relationships with students, faculty, parents, and the administration, which includes having a working knowledge of every student’s academic and extracurricular program and social and emotional health.
• Be aware of the educational, physical, social, and psychological needs of the members of our school community and develop plans for meeting those needs. 
• Provide for the academic guidance of students, maintain complete academic records on all students, and oversee the grading and the reporting of standards and methods used by teachers in measuring student achievement. 
• Meet with the Director of Middle School and the Associate Head of School on a regular basis to develop, monitor, and revise the academic program and goals of the school.
