The Middle School at St. Paul Academy and Summit School is a vibrant and dynamic division where students experience the transition from childhood to young adulthood safely while supported and challenged by adults who genuinely enjoy and understand students at this age. The Middle School is a highly collaborative adult community where exemplary and professional relationships are nurtured and expected. The Developmental Designs for Middle School program forms the basis of the robust advisory program as well as the student and adult community norms both with and beyond the classroom. In the Middle School accountable classroom, students are challenged to embrace new ideas and think independently, developing intellectual skills, collaborative skills, and organizational skills. The classroom experience is based on increased academic rigor combined with increased freedom of choice.
SPA is currently seeking applicants for a Middle School Principal. The Middle School Principal reports to the Head of School and is charged with the comprehensive responsibility for all activities involving students and faculty in the Middle School. The Middle School Principal leads the Middle School Administrative Team and serves on the K-12 Leadership Team, the K-12 Academic Council, the K-12 Sabbatical Committee, the K-12 Calendar Committee, and others as assigned. The Middle School Principal works in close and frequent collaboration with K-12 leaders, such as the Assistant Head of School for Academic Programs, the Assistant Head of School for Student Development and Community Engagement, the Lower School Principal, the Upper School Principal, the Director of the Center for Learning and Teaching, the Director of Intercultural Life, and the Department Chairs.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills,
Deep and nuanced understanding of student development from ages 11 through 14,
Ability to master and oversee the complex and intricate details of all aspects of Middle School schedule and program,
Strong ability to nurture and develop cohesive, accountable, and respectful adult community within the Middle School
Experience working in diverse communities and ability to lead in an equitable manner
Strong ability to work collaboratively with other leaders both within the division and across the K-12 program;
Ability to foster and develop through a collaborative process academic curriculum as well as social and emotional programs for Middle School students,
Excellent ability to communicate with parents.
Excellent organization, time-management and follow-through skills.
Strong academic background including Master’s degree in relevant field, experience with Middle School programs, and support for the mission of SPA and the vision of the Middle School. Experience with Developmental Designs for Middle School preferred.
