SophieConnect provides quality online courses underpinned by the educational philosophy and mission of Sacred Heart education. SophieConnect offers AP-and non-AP full-year and semester-long courses to high school students. Online course facilitators are responsible for providing a personalized and engaging educational environment that is in accordance with the Goals and Criteria of a Sacred Heart education and the philosophy that grounds it. SophieConnect teachers are experienced educators, well versed in mission-driven education, experts in their discipline, and well qualified to design and facilitate challenging, engaging, and innovative online courses. All classes are facilitated via Blackboard.
AP Statistics Advanced Placement Statistics is divided into four major themes. In exploratory analysis, students analyze data that makes use of graphical and numerical techniques to study patterns and departure from patterns. In planning a study, students collect data according to a well-developed plan in order to have valid information regarding a previous established conjecture. In probability, students study the tool used for anticipating what the distribution of data should look like under a given model. In addition, in statistical inference, they will select appropriate models to interact with data and to draw conclusions from data. In all areas, the TI-Nspire graphing calculator and/or computer software programs will be utilized.
Education Candidates should have a master’s degree in Math or related field and 3-5 years experience teaching the aforementioned course (or equivalent) to Upper School students. A strong candidate will be motivated to help advance our rigorous online mathematics program. Preference will be given to candidates with a proven track record of teaching Satistics with some online teaching and/or learning experience.
Ability to work effectively and collaboratively over a distance is required.
Knowledge of online learning pedagogy is desired.
Strong writing and organizational skills, and a willingness to learn new technology are required.
Expectations SophieConnect faculty are key to ensuring that students are successful in the online classroom. This commitment to student success requires faculty to work individually with struggling students by providing them one-on-one support through online meetings, extra feedback and collaborating with the academic support team. SophieConnect faculty are required to respond to student inquiries within 24 hours and be fully active in the online classroom five of the 7 days per week.
Course Design & Summer Workshop All new SophieConnect teachers are expected to take the Course Builder Summer Workshop. This training is a blend of hands-on, real-time training, course development, SophieConnect faculty expectations, best practices, pedagogy, creating inquiry-driven learning communities, and effectively using the online learning platform (LMS) and web conference system (Zoom). The three-week Summer Workshop is delivered asynchronously, in an online cohort format, using Blackboard. Some face to face meetings will be required via Zoom. The time commitment for new faculty varies based on previous experience using Learning Management Systems (such as Moodle, Blackboard) and/or classroom experience. The stipend to design a course over the summer is $1,500. A two-week Introduction to Sacred Heart Education online workshop is required for teachers new to Sacred Heart mission and philosophy.
Compensation Successful candidates receive a contract from Sacred Heart Greenwich, the home of SophieConnect. The calendar for the year is set by the SophieConnect Directors. Stipends: The compensation is $7,000 for a full year course (max. 18 students) and $3,500 for a semester long course. Teachers will be compensated for building a course during the summer before school opens. Participation in an online Summer Course Builder workshop is mandatory for all new hires. The stipend for building and designing a course is $1,500.
