Lakeside School, an independent 5-12 coeducational day school located in North Seattle is currently recruiting for Middle School English Teacher/Library Literacy Specialist for the 2019-20 school year. Responsibilities The English teacher position is responsible for teaching two sections of English, focusing on creating confident, fluent writers and critical, insightful readers. The teacher will join a highly collaborative department. Specific responsibilities for this position include: - Create a classroom environment with equal measures of high challenge and high support.
- Provide academic support for students outside of class time (answering homework questions, providing extra writing help, etc.) as needed.
- Collaborate and participate in the work of the English Department on innovative curriculum development, pedagogy, and assessment.
- Attend English Department, grade-level team, and faculty meetings as scheduled.
The Librarian/Literary Specialist position is responsible for oversight and management of the collection and for promoting reading throughout the school, developing a school culture that values and promotes reading as an activity fundamental to personal growth and academic success. Specific responsibilities include: - Manage a collection of resources appropriate to the curriculum, the learners, and the teaching styles and instructional strategies used within the school community.
- Complete daily circulation desk duty and supervision of students during both lunch periods.
- Plan and implement meaningful school-wide literacy programs that will promote a love of reading and lifelong learning, including but not limited to:
-Perform monthly book talks at each grade level. -Sponsor and promote book clubs that reach as many students as possible. -Connect with and bringing in authors as speakers. -Coordinate a robust, relevant and developmentally appropriate summer reading program. - Maintain direct and consistent connection with English department.
- Stay abreast of curricula in all departments and school programs (GSL, service learning, outdoor) and cultivating reading opportunities connected to those.
- Keep a pulse on the publishing industry and awards.
- Connect with Brain and Learning Lab to support students.
This person will also act as co-advisor for middle school students; and participate in the life of the school community which includes grade-level outings, admissions events, experiential programs such as outdoor and service learning, and engagement with student life.
