Located just west of Stanford University, Woodland is an independent day school that offers a joyful approach to learning in a diverse, respectful, and inclusive environment for approximately 300 students in early childhood through eighth-grade. We have two sections of each grade level K- 8 with class sizes that average from 14-18 per class.

Overview of the Science Department
The graduating Woodland student has deep understanding of how major concepts in science and scientific thinking like patterns, change, cause and effect, structure and function, and systems cycle throughout any content they are discovering whether it be the interactions between atoms or the butterfly cycle. Woodland School also understands that responsible global citizens need the skills not only to explain and explore scientific phenomena, but also to critically think and evaluate large amounts of data and information that can be applied to everyday life in real-world and hands-on ways. With a shift in our society’s ability to gather data, students will need these skills in order to be responsible global citizens. Science students recognize that their ideas are integral to class learning and are expected to challenge their own understandings together.
Woodland School seeks an inspiring science teacher who develops students’ inquiring minds and gives them the hands on science skills. Teachers are encouraged to immerse students in collaborative learning experiences, critical thinking skills, and evidence based explanations. The philosophy of the science department aims to engage the students in real world problems, allows them to explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate their own findings.
Science has evolved from a content based focus to a performance based program where students learn science content through interactive inquiry based labs, discussions, activities, and projects. Woodland school teachers are no longer the keepers of knowledge but instead facilitate student-centered learning by engaging them in authentic scientific scholarship through fun and engaging real-world situations.
The position requires maintaining a full teaching load, serving as an advisor to ten to twelve students, and chaperoning and duties, such as Outdoor Education week, and school dances. Teachers are expected to help twice a week at recess and lunch duty.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
We seek a dynamic teacher who inspires students to ask questions and examine Science. This individual should embrace working collaboratively and creatively with colleagues in shaping various curricular areas and divisions. Candidates should be passionate about teaching and have a love of science and middle school-aged students and have a desire to share and collaborate with colleagues across all subject areas.
Bachelor's degree in science, science related field, a teaching certificate or credential or equivalent professional experience which would which would translate to successful classroom teaching. Advanced degree preferred but not required.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
Collaborates well with colleagues of diverse backgrounds on pedagogical approaches, curricular alignment and instructional strategies. Applicants will be required to create integrated units of study with faculty members of other disciplines in an ongoing effort to deepen student learning and model real-world connections.
Lead several sections of 7th and 8th grade science.
The science program at Woodland focuses on the development of scientific skills using student-designed experiments and investigations. Experience in designing and implementing project-based curricula is required, and experience developing integrated curriculum is highly favored.
Encourages collaborative teamwork in the classroom, teaching students to communicate effectively and thoughtfully, justify their reasoning and to consider multiple perspectives when solving problems.
Invests in the life of the school by leading mixed grade advisory program.
Our advisory program focuses on social and emotional learning and establishing a collaborative community culture at Woodland School.
Participate in weekly department meetings and multidisciplinary team meetings, anti-bias training, and all aspects that support the student experience.
Demonstrated professional behavior, including discretion, judgment, and integrity.
Effectively interacts with a diverse population of students and faculty.
