Please note: Program times are location-specific Organizational Background Horizons Greater Washington (HGW) is an academic and enrichment program designed to help students from low-income families in the DC-area reach their full potential. HGW supports over 370 students from 1st grade through 9th grade with year-round programming and support. Working in partnership with our families, sending schools, and host schools, HGW is committed to developing the whole child through experiences that build problem-solving skills, foster awareness of community responsibility, instill respect for self and others, encourage a lifelong interest in learning, and inspire a meaningful, choice-filled life. The program begins when a student enters 1st grade and extends until they enter 9th grade, allowing for a rewarding long-term relationship between a diverse set of learners and the nurturing staff who work with them every summer. Position Description Horizons Greater Washington is seeking a dedicated and effective K-6 Lead Teacher with classroom experience and a penchant for cultivating students lifelong love of learning. Each Lead Teacher will work with a teaching assistant, volunteer, and certified reading specialist to deliver engaging, inquiry-based curriculum in small classes of no more than 17 students. Additionally, Lead Teachers are supported by a Site Director and the HGW administrative team. Job Responsibilities The Lead Teachers areas of direct responsibility include, but are not limited to, the following: - Design and teach high quality, culturally-responsive, project-based curriculum and engage students in learning math and language arts throughout our six-week summer enrichment program
- Attend a one-week orientation session prior to the start of the program (as noted in the dates above)
- Engage approximately 15-17 students in daily lessons that promote active, student-centered learning in math and reading
- Examine student assessment data to inform decision making and improve instruction, consulting with the Site Director and Reading Specialists as necessary
- Establish and maintain a classroom environment conducive to learning
- Supervise students during daily meals
- Accompany students while they are in the pool during their swimming lessons
- Plan experiential learning experiences and accompany students on weekly field trips
- Attend Family Night, Ice Cream Social, and Faculty Meetings and other activities, including those that may fall outside the program hours
- Maintain daily attendance records, develop and submit lessons plans, and provide formative feedback to the Site Director and Assistant Site Director on a consistent basis
- Ride the bus for both student pick-up and drop-off as needed
- Work with approximately two teaching assistants to collaboratively deliver lessons and activities
- Ensure compliance to state and organizational regulations and policies
- Meet regularly with the Site Director (and Program Director as needed) to proactively accomplish goals and problem solve as issues arise
- Prepare and submit a final evaluation of each students progress prior to the end of the program
- Assist in the administration of student assessments
In addition to having a steadfast commitment to Horizons mission, the ideal candidate will possess classroom experience in project-based instruction, behavior management, and differentiation. Candidates must also be flexible, organized, and self-driven. Minimum Qualifications - Bachelors Degree
- Position-relevant teaching credentials are strongly preferred, but equivalent content expertise or teaching experience will be considered in lieu of certification
- Basic swimming proficiency and comfort with being in the water
- Knowledge of best practices for classroom management as well as socio-emotional learning and the ability to implement specific strategies for developing childrens non-cognitive skills such as focus, determination, empathy and self-discipline
- Proven ability to relate well to diverse children and families as well as plan and deliver engaging, challenging lessons for school-aged children
- Excellent communicative, organizational, and time management skills
- Leadership experience and demonstrated ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team
- Access to reliable transportation for travel to/from the program
Preferred Qualifications - Experience teaching elementary and/or middle school-aged students in a classroom setting is strongly preferred
- Knowledge of effective teaching strategies for second language learners
