POSITION SUMMARY The secondary principal serves as the school and educational leader responsible for development, implementation, supervision, and evaluation of a comprehensive program of educational and student services for students in grades 7-12 (secondary enrollment, 363; total school enrollment,630). The principal administers the program under the supervision of the Head of School in accordance with board policies and consistent with continuing requirements for academic accreditation (currently through AdvancEd). The principal oversees all secondary school instructional personnel and serves as an advocate for the staff, school, and school community as appropriate. Primary Professional Responsibilities: - Ensure the alignment of curriculum, instruction and assessment with FACS mission and vision, the School Improvement Plan, and secondary school instructional goals.
- Collaborate with the Elementary Principal to promote seamless, integrated learning through elementary and secondary school. This may include creating vertical teams to enhance instruction.
- Be familiar with the 1:1 Initiative and a leader in the area of technology in the classroom. Encourage teachers in this area and provide them with opportunities to learn and implement technology as an instructional strategy.
- Motivate and encourage secondary faculty with the following goals in mind:
- Provide leadership opportunities that promote professional growth among faculty;
- Promote collaborative efforts within departments;
- Hold teachers accountable for adoption of stated departmental objectives as well as for compliance with departmental practices;
- Provide cost-efficient and beneficial professional development opportunities for secondary faculty;
- Recognize and support faculty initiatives by attending events and acknowledging achievements;
- Provide leadership that ensures teacher fidelity to the prescribed curricula, alignment of assessment practices with curricula and instruction, and accountability for best instructional practices (including teacher accountability for measurable student progress). An effective leader:
- Is knowledgeable about and deeply involved in the design and implementation of the instructional program;
- Prioritizes effective teaching by visiting classrooms regularly and working with teachers on instructional issues;
- Monitors instruction and assessment practices ensuring alignment with the School Improvement Plan;
- Assists staff in developing student growth plans;
- Reliably and validly evaluates staff in effective instruction and assessment practices.
- Lead the development, implementation and evaluation of a data-driven plan for increasing student achievement, including the use of multiple student data elements. In this capacity, the principal will:
- Recognize and seek out multiple data sources;
- Analyze and interpret multiple data sources to inform school improvement efforts;
- Implement data-driven plan for improved teaching and learning;
- Assist staff in using data to guide, modify and improve classroom teaching and learning.
- Demonstrate commitment to closing the achievement gap. The principal:
- Uses evidence to support student improvement;
- Identifies barriers to achievement and knows how to close resulting gaps;
- Provides evidence of growth in student learning.
- Manage both staff and fiscal resources to support student achievement and result in improved teaching and learning. This includes the responsibility to:
- Develop secondary instructional job descriptions as needed;
- Assist with the human resources search process;
- Oversee interviews of secondary faculty applicants and recommend personnel to Head of School;
- Monitor expenditures by secondary faculty to assist in good fiscal responsibility for FACS.
- Track secondary teacher licensing and certification, where required, and hold teachers accountable for same.
- Partner with the school community to promote student learning. The principal:
- Understands the FACS community and works to establish a genuine partnership model between home and school.
- Aligns school and community efforts and values as a work in progress that must be nurtured, sustained, and monitored, and is able to influence others to adopt the same understanding;
- Implements community engagement efforts that result in improved teaching and learning;
- Meets with parents of secondary students to resolve issues.
- Partner with Administrative Team Members. This includes but is not limited to:
- Working with the Guidance Director on issues affecting Student Services, course offerings, class scheduling, and standardized testing;
- Working with the IT Coordinator to facilitate the use of technology in instruction;
- Partnering with the Admissions Director and representing the secondary school at open house and preview events to promote increased school enrollment;
- Collaborating with the Communications and Advancement Director to promote a culture of philanthropy in support of the school and to provide the school community with needed information related to secondary school operations;
- Working with the Athletic Director to facilitate opportunities for student growth in extra-curricular athletic pursuits.
