Girard College seeks an experienced English Language Arts Teacher beginning September 2019. The current assignment for this position is to teach eleventh and twelfth grade English courses and one elective. Our teacher will need to implement developmentally appropriate curriculum and instruction aligned to Common Core State Standards. S/he will also work collaboratively with teachers in other disciplines as well as the residential staff responsible for the high school students and participate fully in the college academic and residential community. The position reports directly to the Head of High School.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Teach Language Arts to high school students.
Provide instructional leadership with a high degree of competence, adhering to high expectations within a student-centered, performance-based context.
Manage the classroom in a positive, enthusiastic, and professional manner.
Work collaboratively with the Instructional Coaches, teachers in other disciplines as well as the residential staff responsible for the high school students.
Be persistent in attempting to identify and to put into practice effective methods or content which will support and enhance teaching and learning.
Complete all administrative responsibilities in a timely manner throughout the school year.
Support and encourage students in any assigned capacity including the advisory program.
Have significant competency integrating technology into instruction.
Facilitate and maintain appropriate communication with students, parents/guardians, and residential faculty.
Become involved with and supportive of the College community at large, its Mission, Vision and Core Values, for the benefit of student social, ethical and intellectual education
Model and maintain appropriate student behavior.
Participate in all high school events.
Participate in all professional development activities assigned by Girard College.
Develop and maintain a constructive relationship with parents
Other responsibilities as assigned.
Bachelor’s Degree in English or another appropriate major, Master’s preferred.
Experience teaching English language arts required.
PA Teaching Certification required.
Teaching experience at the high school level, especially in a diverse setting.
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
Proven ability to work collaboratively with all members of the community
Experience in teaching and monitoring independent reading skills.
Experience/ability to integrate technology into instruction.
Consistently strong recommendations from previous employers and others.
Preferred - some competencies in a range of areas supportive of student learning e.g. coaching, club leadership, the arts.
Local candidates preferred as there is no relocation reimbursement available
This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
