Marin Academy seeks a practicing musician with teaching experience for a permanent part-time music teaching position starting in August 2019. The Marin Academy Music program philosophy is to inspire each student to actively engage in the processes of building their own musicianship, and embrace the challenges of creating continual musical growth through rigorous practice, regular goal setting and self-reflection, and the creation of a compelling performance with a group of peers in a band setting. Marin Academy has an ensemble-based music program that emphasizes skills such as listening, collaboration, and creativity while balancing technical learning and hands-on experience. The progression of courses prepares students for performances by allowing them to work in small groups at their level and provides students opportunities to participate in a wide variety of musical styles.
Candidates should be conversant in the major popular music styles, including jazz; have knowledge of pitch, harmony, and rhythm; and possess experience directing and teaching music. We are looking for a teacher (or teachers) to teach the following courses: Roots (with an emphasis on the lineage of American music); Music of theWorld (with an emphasis on European and African traditions); and Contemporary Music (with an emphasis on rock, rhythm and blues, folk, pop, and blues styles).
MA is in the early years of an ambitious strategic plan which emphasizes interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary teaching and learning, competency-based assessment, equity, and inclusion. Candidates eager to work toward these strategic goals and/or experience with interdisciplinary work will be prioritized in our search process. Furthermore, we welcome candidates who are eager to grow in their professional lives and who demonstrate a willingness and an ability to engage in reflection on their practice.
MA values the inclusion of many voices and perspectives, and candidates should have the inclination and experience to work in a diverse community focused on issues of equity and social justice. In addition, we highly value the student-teacher relationship.
Marin Academy’s mission statement “asks every individual to think, question, and create in an environment of encouragement and compassion, and challenges each person to accept the responsibilities posed by education in a democratic society.” The school is a vibrant and diverse community, and students and teachers alike continue to work towards the furthering of an inclusive and supportive school.
