In cooperation with the Administrative Team, the Grade One Assistant Teacher will work collaboratively with the Head Teacher to implement the School’s instructional program in accordance with the School’s mission, goals, objectives and philosophy of learning.
Perform duties and responsibilities identified by the Head and Assistant Head of School in order to support the instructional program and children.
Be flexible in terms of classroom assignment as need arises within the school.
Classroom responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Supporting the Head Teacher in providing an attractive, well-kept classroom that encourages creativity, exploration and decision-making by the children.
Providing verbal praise and acceptance while providing clear and consistent expectations for the children's behavior.
Maintenance and necessary housekeeping duties of the classroom, bathrooms and playgrounds.
Coordinating and supervising snacks and meals.
Maintaining a professional attitude and work behavior.
Maintaining an overall professional personal appearance adhering to the guidelines offered in the Faculty Handbook.
Meeting with the Head Teacher on a weekly basis to plan and identify individual instructional responsibilities, as well as to review student and curricular needs. These meetings may be scheduled before or after the regularly scheduled school day.
With guidance from the Head Teacher, ensuring that all classroom bulletin boards are current and reflect activities and themes being explored in the classroom.
Supervising the class, as well as planning and assisting with instruction.
Assisting in other capacities as determined by the Grade One Head Teacher.
Observing all rules and regulations of St. Thomas’s Day School pertaining to the health, safety and care of children.
Assisting with student and class records, as well as helping with the classroom inventory.
Preparing the classroom for the opening and closing of the school year.
Providing support to the Head Teacher on Back-to-School Night, Parent Conference days and special grade level events.
Attending parent conferences as requested by Head Teacher and Administration.
Attending and preparing for all class field trips and assisting with all special class programs, such as class plays or performances.
Assisting and supporting the specials teachers during specials classes (e.g. science, library, computer, music, physical education, drama, Spanish)
Maintaining patterns of discipline that reflect the St. Thomas's philosophy as stated in the Faculty Handbook.
Assisting with providing for the health and well being of each child at all times, including training children in emergency procedures, assisting with fire drills, filing accident reports and first aid procedures as outlined in the Faculty Handbook.
Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education preferred
Experience teaching students in grades K-2
Experience in teaching reading and writing
Knowledge in a variety of approaches to math instruction
Strong personal and interpersonal skills
