The New Haven Unified School District, Union City, California, Board of Education, is seeking a highly qualified and fully certified Superintendent. The Board wishes to have the successful candidate assume the responsibilities of the position July 1, 2019.
McPherson & Jacobson, L.L.C., Executive Recruitment and Development, in collaboration with the California School Boards Association, has been engaged as the consultant in a search for outstanding candidates. They will assist the board of Education in identifying and screening the candidates.
Location: 30 miles southeast of San Francisco
The candidate must have the background, skills, and abilities essential for excellence in educational leadership. The board recognizes that selecting a superintendent is one of the most important decisions it will make. The Board desires candidates that have a proven ability and demonstrated accomplishment for the following position criteria:
An experienced educator who is committed to student achievement as integral to the culture of the district and each school. The next superintendent must know the best practices in teaching and learning, be able to implement effective curriculum, assist in the selection of purposeful professional development, and employ systems of assessment that all result in increased student achievement. New Haven Unified School District is looking for a leader with a current knowledge of Local Control Accountability Plan, Common Core State Standards, and the CAASP assessment system.
A collaborator who listens to and thinks about others first before stating their own opinions, has strong verbal, written and digital communication skills, and is accessible to all including those with differing opinions. The superintendent must have a proven ability to bring people together to build trusting and respectful relationships with the Board, administration, staff, students and community.
An executive manager who recruits, develops and supervises a talented team of leaders who are empowered to perform at high levels in their own fields of expertise. A leader who has the skills and abilities to market the district in order to attract families and students back from charter and private schools in order to increase enrollment. A fiscal manager who will use strategies to improve the financial resources available to the district such as reducing truancy, supporting community fund raising and using effective budgeting processes. The superintendent must have knowledge and skills in budget development and the ability to direct resources utilizing the Local Control Accountability Planning (LCAP) process.
A community leader who is excited about and committed to being visible in the schools and engaged with the community in a meaningful and discernible way. A person who can effectively relate to diverse cultures, listen to their needs, dreams and opinions, and is skilled in resolving their issues with the schools. The superintendent is expected to be a person who invites the community to be involved with the schools and likewise models the District’s involvement with the community through their own participation in community events and organizations.
An ethical leader with strong principled work style who leads by example and models and expects high standards for self, staff and students. A person who possesses the characteristics of honesty, loyalty, dependability, humor, and motivates all to perform at high levels of expertise. A superintendent that has demonstrated a willingness to take calculated risks that benefit students and district.
An influential problem solver who has the abilities to understand and implement solutions for the complex issues of California school finance, education law and collective bargaining, and strategic planning. A person who continue positive employee relationships by implementing an effective, collaborative, and credible negotiation process where employee interests are heard with respect and responded in a timely, thoughtful manner.
Successful teaching and administrative experience are preferred.
It is required that candidates have a Master’s Degree, doctorate preferred.
