New Canaan Country School seeks an experienced learning resources teacher to support the range of learners in the Upper School (Grades 7-9), particularly those with documented learning differences. Qualified applicants should possess at least three years of teaching experience working in a special education environment or the equivalent. A relevant Master’s degree is preferable, as is experience with and a willingness to potentially teach other academic disciplines.
The duties of the Upper School Learning Resources Teacher include but are not limited to:
Teaching in the US Learning Lab program---self-contained, small group classes which impart evidence-based strategies in support of reading comprehension, written expression, executive functions and generalized learning strategies. It would be preferable for the candidate to have experience with other academic areas or extracurricular disciplines
Assisting with the creation of individual learning plans that target students’ specific curricular/learning needs
Conduct formal observations of students in a variety of settings to gather quantitative and qualitative information about behavioral and learning needs
Communicating and collaborating with US classroom teachers to implement recommended classroom accommodations and interventions
Guiding teachers on how to differentiate instruction for a variety of learning styles
Reviewing evaluations, summarizing and providing information to classroom teachers, administrators and parents
Partnering with campus-wide Learning Resources Teachers to support student growth and transition between divisions
Communicating with parents, tutors, specialists, and teachers as needed
Coordinating accommodations for testing scenarios
Working closely with Learning Resources Teachers from other divisions to ensure continuity
Working closely with Upper School Division Head and School Counselor to monitor student growth
Attending Upper School division meetings, Student Support Services meetings, weekly Grade Level Team meetings
Contributing to coaching and student life programs is welcomed
Finds joy in working with this unique age group and participating in school life
Strategy-based, engaging teaching style
Proven competency with assistive technology
Demonstrates commitment to engaging and learning from diverse backgrounds and experiences
Possesses familiarity with legal responsibilities as they pertain to IEP and 504 plans within an independent school community
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Experience and tenure teaching students with learning differences
Demonstrated skills in communications and interpersonal relations within and across multiple constituencies
Master’s degree in relevant field
