The vision of the Center for Educational Outreach (CEO) is to increase the number of STEM leaders from underrepresented groups going into STEM fields. Our mission is to engage JHU students, staff and faculty to prepare PK-12 students, particularly those underrepresented in STEM fields, for college and inspire them to choose STEM as a career. Our strategy is to offer STEM educational outreach to Baltimore City Public School students and to expand Engineering Innovation to reach more high school students in the U.S.

Purpose of Position:
Barclay School, in partnership with the Center for Educational Outreach/Whiting School of Engineering, offers summer STEM programs for Baltimore City students. Throughout the program, students participate in a variety of activities including hands-on engineering, high and low-tech makerspace projects, teambuilding activities, and enrichment programs. The Lead Teacher will serve on a team of teachers who oversee the engineering curriculum for grade 5-8. Responsibilities include lesson planning, classroom management, attendance monitoring, supervision of students during field trips and enrichment blocks and collaborating with TAs/Summer Team.
Note: This position is casual (full-time for summer: June 24-July 31, 8:00am-3:30pm) and is not benefits eligible.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Implement Engineering curriculum for students in grades 5-8.
Coordinate with the Johns Hopkins team and the Barclay Summer STEM Academy team to offer a seamless summer program.
Work with a Teaching Assistant to develop daily plans, prepare materials, and facilitate daily activities.
Maintain ongoing inventory of materials and submit re-order requests at the end of the season.
Supervise student participants in the classroom, during enrichment programs, and on field trips adhering to safety guidelines and maintaining a positive learning environment.
Attend and support end of season evening showcase.
Participate in three day professional development at the end of June (June 26-28).
Assist Barclay Program Manager in presenting training materials based on expertise.
Complete daily attendance.
Send home all related summer program communications.
Check email daily and respond to requests.
Maintain and implement participant records.
Communication with parents as needed/required.
Knowledge and Skills:
Formal classroom (K-12) experience.
Experience teaching hands-on STEM projects and the engineering design process
Time management skills, attention to detail, and proactive problem solving
Passion for STEM educational outreach
Ability to work independently leading a structured curriculum.
Ability to accommodate a multitude of learning styles and differentiate instruction as needed.
Knowledge of Baltimore City and Baltimore City Public Schools (City Schools)
Experience relating to students, parents, and partners of similar demographics to Baltimore City
Strong communication (written and oral), organizational, customer service, and interpersonal skills
Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Forms).
Bachelor’s degree required.
3 Years of related experience.
Master’s degree in Education/STEM Education or related field.
Formal teaching experience in a K-12 setting.
Direct experience with grade 5-8.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Experience in one or more of the following areas required:
Proven youth development and/or mentoring experience.
Successful K-12 teaching; hands-on STEM projects and the engineering design process.
MSDE Certification in Elementary/Secondary or Science/STEM.
