ABOUT ESPERANZA ACADEMY: Esperanza Academy is seeking a full-time mathematics teacher for grades five through eight. Esperanza Academy is an independent, tuition-free middle school (grade 5-8) in the Episcopal tradition where 60 underserved girls from Lawrence, Massachusetts are welcomed into an empowering learning community. Founded in 2006, Esperanza offers its students a transformative education that integrates a rigorous academic curriculum using 1:1 technology devices with co-curricular programs in athletics, the arts, clubs, community service, cultural enrichment, social skills, spirituality, and outdoor education. Our students attend extended school days and an extended school year, in classrooms averaging 15 students, using a co-teaching model in most subjects. This holistic educational approach has accrued a remarkable track record: Our graduates attend 23 different secondary schools—more than two-thirds of each graduating class has earned full scholarships to independent day and boarding schools— and boast a 100% high-school graduation rate. Eighty percent (80%) of eligible Esperanza graduates are also enrolled in college. Esperanza Academy is 100% privately funded. We are accredited by the Association of Independent Schools of New England and members of the NativityMiguel Coalition.
OUR STUDENTS: Esperanza Academy serves 62 middle school girls, who are 95% Latina and 91% have learned English as a second language. One hundred percent (100%) of incoming students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Students gain admission through a lottery. While Esperanza is a school rooted in the Episcopal tradition, nearly all of our students come from other religious traditions. Families support the school through nominal enrollment fees and by adult volunteerism in the school.
The ideal candidate will possess most or all of these qualifications:
3+ years of math teaching experience, preferably with students in an urban setting and/or middle school age.
A bachelor’s degree in math education or relevant field
Graduate degree preferred.
Ability to effectively manage a classroom with diverse social-emotional needs in a positive, and consistent way that fosters academic progress and appropriate behavior.
Ability to create, communicate, and hold students accountable to high expectations and learning goals aligned with high school and college-preparation standards.
Ability to provide student-centered instruction, particularly through discussion, and inquiry-based, collaborative learning, and discussion.
Ability to teach students concepts, applications, and fluency in a sequential manner, building in complexity over time.
An inquiry-based approach to teaching, including an interest in innovative practices and ongoing professional development.
Ability to design assignments and assessments that provide effective feedback on growth and proficiency to students, families, and teachers.
Ability to use data to inform instruction.
A sense of humor and flexibility
Openness to the role that spirituality plays in education
Strong personal commitment to the school’s core values of Wisdom, Integrity, Leadership, and Service
Ability to promote equity and inclusion both within the classroom and the school community at large.
Teach 4 sections of math
Integrate classroom technologies that enhance teaching, learning, and preparing students for the future
Interest and willingness to participate in interdisciplinary initiatives such as STEAM
Participate actively in the growth of the mathematics department, including work in activity-based and/or project-based learning
Pursue appropriate professional development and remain abreast of changes in math education and pedagogy
Represent the department through committee membership, attendance at faculty and department meetings, and other community initiatives
Communicate in a timely and professional manner with all community stakeholders including parents
Assist students in project-based research, and help them recognize and develop their academic and leadership abilities
Maintain an active presence and participate fully in campus life by attending School events whenever possible
Serve as a class advisor and athletic coach
