National Cathedral School (NCS) announces an opening for an English teacher in its Upper School (grades 9-12) for an appointment beginning in August 2019. The NCS English department comprises a faculty of grades 4-12 and offers a challenging curriculum aimed at graduating students with impeccable writing and analytical skills. The successful candidate for the position, therefore, will help students embrace a love of literature while fostering critical thinking and be committed to successful and developmentally appropriate teaching of writing. In addition, the candidate should have expert knowledge of the elements of literary analysis and writing mechanics, have a comprehensive understanding of and dedication to student-centered pedagogy and discussion-based classrooms, and maintain a challenging curriculum within a nurturing environment.
Teaching responsibilities will include English 10, one of the core curriculum courses, which explores British literature and the effects of imperialism from the English Renaissance to the Modernist era, and 11th- and 12th-grade electives offered in coordination with St. Albans School. NCS seeks to identify candidates who have background in and experience with teaching literature outside the traditional American and British literary canons. In addition to a regular course load, the successful candidate will also serve as the sponsor of a student publication.
The typical Upper School day runs from 7:45 am to 3:45 pm, though teachers at NCS are also responsible for supervising students in a variety of settings, including homeroom advising; some committee and administrative work, depending on workload, background, and experience; and other duties typical at an urban day school. Salary is competitive, based on experience, and the position includes a full benefits package. Qualified candidates hold at least a bachelor’s degree in English (master’s degree preferred) and have pertinent teaching experience.
NCS is committed to leadership in multicultural education and a culturally diverse faculty and staff and seeks applications for this position from candidates who will contribute to an atmosphere in which all are valued and supported. As a result, the successful candidate will teach and develop a curriculum in which students see themselves represented. The school expects candidates to have a willingness and ability to use differentiated instruction in the classroom.
