The Out-of-Door Academy seeks a Middle School Visual Arts Teacher, who has the proven ability to create a vibrant learning environment in a student-centered classroom. The ideal candidate will inspire confident young artists, using multiple approaches and materials. He or she will provide opportunities for students to follow individualized passions and curiosities, while learning the nuances of art. The person who best qualifies understands that educating the whole child is an integral part of the ODA experience and that his or her participation in extra-curriculars is valued and expected.
Reporting to the Head of Middle School, the Middle School Visual Arts Teacher will be responsible for the following:
Teach up to six (6) sections of visual arts.
Guide students in developing skills essential to effective learning practices, including creativity, critical thinking, communication and collaboration.
Participate as a student advisor, coach and/or sponsor of extracurricular activities.
Model a growth mindset regarding best practices and important trends in curriculum, pedagogy, educational technology, and co-curricular activities.
Foster a culture in which students, faculty, and staff are known, valued, challenged, and supported along their unique educational journey.

Experience, Skills & Knowledge
Bachelor’s Degree with coursework in Visual Arts required; Masters Degree preferred.
Minimum of five (5) years successful teaching experience; demonstrated passion for working with middle school students.
Experienced instruction of various mediums of visual arts, including 2-D, 3-D, Photography, Ceramics, Drawing, Painting and Graphic Arts.
Proven record of success, preferably at an independent school.
Versatile use of a wide variety of art media, technology and approaches.
Able to integrate art concepts, artwork, art history, styles, and aesthetics with classroom units, concepts, and themes.
A successful track record of working effectively with a wide range of constituencies including students, faculty, staff and parents.

This is a full-time teaching position beginning in August 2019. Compensation will be highly competitive and commensurate with experience and includes a comprehensive benefits package. Out-of-Door was founded on Siesta Key in 1924 to serve students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. In 1996, a second campus in the Lakewood Ranch area of Sarasota was acquired to accommodate the addition of an upper school. Over the past ten years, t...he school has experienced steady and impressive enrollment growth from 550 to 740 students. The campuses have also evolved and developed in response to this growth. Today, the five-acre Siesta Key campus is home to the Lower School (PK-5), and the 85-acre Uihlein Campus in Lakewood Ranch houses both the Middle and Upper Schools.
