The Field School seeks a Studio Arts Department Chair for the 2019-2020 school year. Department Chairs are curricular leaders at The Field School and play a key role in promoting a vibrant and creative culture of teaching and learning. Central to the role of department chair is consistent communication with teachers, students, parents, and administrators about departmental objectives, practices, and challenges in the context of the whole school program. The Studio Department Chair reports to the Dean of Faculty. The Chair will also teach two classes in the Studio department, coach one season (or equivalent) and be a member of the Department Chair team.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Teaching & Teacher Effectiveness
To monitor and evaluate continuously the performance of each teacher in the department. To support teacher growth and reflective practice through regular classroom observations with feedback and recommendations.
To initiate the feedback loop between school leadership and teachers.
To articulate the department’s strategies in achieving the mission and goals of the school and to set departmental objectives and policies accordingly in cooperation with the members of the department
Enriching the Academic Experience
To establish systems and guidelines for regular curriculum review, evaluation, revision, and documentation and to support and oversee the collaborative work of department members as designers and evaluators of curriculum that supports the mission of the school.
To be aware of and coordinate the teaching objectives, materials, methods to be used, and means of assessment used by each teacher within the department, to monitor course grades in department courses in order to identify issues relevant to grading practices and student learning.
To work with the office of admissions and the Dean of Curriculum regarding the placement of students in appropriate courses, evaluate the placement of new students, advise on the placement of returning students, and to work with families and Grade Heads regarding potential shifts in placement.
To coordinate summer school recommendations for students and to follow up on summer school progress with returning students and their teachers. • To publicize within the school community the scholarship and endeavors of the department and give recognition to exceptional achievement within the department.
To review the technology resources and library resources pertaining to the department and to recommend titles, materials, and technology resources for possible acquisition.
To serve as a role model to encourage faculty self-evaluation, professional growth, scholarship, and effective training.
To inform members of the department regarding plans, curriculum development, assessment practices, resources, facilities, and activities which affect department members.
To hold regularly scheduled meetings with department members that further the mission of the school and seek to improve the quality of teaching.
To participate productively as a member of the Department Chair team in order to ensure academic integration of the school’s mission, values, and curricular aims and to exchange information, strategies, challenges, and ideas regarding the work of the department and the total school program.
To assist in the search for and evaluation of candidates to fill vacancies within the department.
To administer the departmental budget in cooperation with the business manager and to prepare an annual departmental budget that allows for the on-going purchase of additional texts, supplies, and equipment.
To perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School.
To support the school and its leadership.
QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES
Department Chairs should:
1. Have substantial teaching experience, approximately five years or more.
Have strong leadership skills.
Have a commitment to the mission of The Field School.
Have an ability to develop strong, trusting relationships with diverse constituencies.
Have experience successfully leading a team.
Have strong communication skills.
Have a strong knowledge of the department content area.
Have an ability to deliver feedback well.
