The Cathedral School of St. John the Divine, a K-8 institution located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, seeks a dynamic and student-centered Science teacher for its Upper School (grades 5-8). The Science Teacher reports directly to the Head of the Upper School.
Teaches four classes per six-day cycle to four different sections of Upper School Science.
Intense focus on developing the skills of reading, writing, research, inquiry, and design within the sciences.
Establishes and looks for opportunity for cross curricular connections between Science and the other academic disciplines.
Teaches/proctors an elective period in the Upper School.
Will serve as an advisor for approximately seven students. Responsibilities include advocating for the students, communicating with parents about advisees’ progress, guiding advisees through daily school life, sharing information, and leading discussions.
Attends regular guidance meetings for Grades 6 and 8 with student support teams to discuss student concerns.
Collaborates with the other members of the Science department to coordinate a clear scope and sequence from grade to grade in terms of both subject matter and skill development.
Collaborates with the Learning Specialist when appropriate to ensure students are being fully supported.
Leads parent/teacher conferences twice yearly.
Writes comments twice yearly for students in their science class.
Is proactive and consistent in parent communication.
Attends Wednesday afternoon meetings.
Periodically monitors lunch and recess, as well as bus or porch.
Accompanies Upper School on overnight trip in the fall.
Leads Science related clubs and electives as necessary.
Is available for other school events and activities as needed.
