Sayre Lower School is seeking a progressive, knowledgeable and passionate educator to lead our experiential Lower School science program. We desire an individual who will use our beautiful, new science laboratory to facilitate a student-centered, inquiry-based science curriculum which is engaging and relevant for our students, building sound foundational skills in scientific principles and techniques while challenging them to be strong critical and imaginative thinkers. In keeping with Sayre’s dedication to constructivist teaching practices, our science program emphasizes “process” over “product” and strives to develop our students’ depth of understanding and scientific literacy, rather than mastery of scientific facts. Ideal candidates will be collaborative team players who have the energy and skill to develop our students’ passion for scientific thought and investigation. We seek to hire an individual with a robust understanding of child development, experience teaching science to elementary-aged children, knowledge of child-directed learning approaches, strong scientific expertise in all areas of elementary science curriculum, experience with designing science curriculum around Next Generation Science Standards, and a healthy sense of humor with a dollop of joy on the side.
In addition to our brand new Lower School building situated on our beautiful campus in downtown Lexington, Sayre School owns a 50 acre athletic complex and farm outside of the Lexington City limits. Our next Lower School science teacher will have the opportunity to play a key role in the continued development and cultivation of this land in ways that build an outdoor education program which supports our students’ knowledge and appreciation of nature, sustainability and ecological principles. There is an amazing opportunity for the ideal candidate to play a key role in shaping the continued development of this educational resource for future generations of Sayre students.
Sayre School recognizes and respects the diversity of backgrounds, outlooks, and talents individuals bring to its community. Sayre defines diversity as differences embodied in (but not limited to) age, ethnicity and race, family status, gender, geographic origin, learning styles, religion, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status. We welcome candidates celebrating the diversity of the world in our educational program, admission policies, staff hiring, and other school-administered programs.
