This position begins August 2019 and involves teaching five classes, as well as co-curricular activities, including student advising, as assigned by the division principal. This position is primarily responsible for the development and implementation of the introductory of Latin to 6th through 8th grades at the Latin I and Latin II level, depending on need and expertise. This position requires an understanding of the culture and origin associated with the Latin language, and a strong desire to teach the subject. Candidates should be comfortable using active and spoken Latin and will be committed to teaching towards proficiency and assessing performance, preferably using comprehensible input and bringing authentic cultural materials into the classroom.
Successful teachers at Bullis are energized by curriculum development and are grounded in current learning theory. Successful Middle School foreign language teachers at Bullis are grounded in current SLA theory, committed to ongoing professional development, and open to a wide range of teaching approaches to reach a diverse student population. Technology use is an ongoing and active development at Bullis for both students and faculty. Candidates should be able to creatively integrate technology to enhance student learning and engagement while working in a one-to-one student-laptop environment.
The ideal candidate will have experience planning student-centered, innovative lessons in course-aligned teams and leading students in inquiry-based learning. The candidate will value interdisciplinary thinking and can expertly guide our students as they develop a deeper understanding of our interconnected world through the study of Latin.
Qualified candidates should possess following education & experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in in Classics, Latin or related field required (required)
Master’s Degree in Classics, Latin or related field (preferred)
Direct experience with Greco-Roman culture is highly desirable
Prior experience teaching 6th through 8th grades is highly desirable
Committed to staying up to date on current pedagogical practices and field-related trends
Experience teaching in a technology-rich environment
Flexible approach to learning, particularly regarding new technology systems and hardware
Detail-oriented, with the capacity to effectively and efficiently manage numerous small and large tasks
Proficiency with basic productivity and media software
Proficiency with Windows and Apple OS, Microsoft Office, cloud computing (Google Docs, etc.), and other productivity and media software
Working knowledge of technology systems, including networks and hardware management
Enjoy working in a cooperative, team-oriented environment
Teaching certificates are not required
