Annunciation Orthodox School (AOS) seeks an English Language Arts teacher who demonstrates proficiencies in both progressive and traditional pedagogies while consistently utilizing child-centered techniques. Reports to: Head of Middle School
Work Schedule: Start Date August 1, 2019 Monday – Friday, 7:30 am to 3:30 pm, additional time as needed for after-school meetings and professional development.
Challenge students to analyze and comprehend literary and informational texts (books, articles, digital sources)
Inspire great student writing and strong grammar skills through the integration of reading and writing
Guide students as they integrate reading, writing, research and technology skills to complete research projects
Teach students to understand and use literary devices such as personification, allusions, and verbal irony
Plan and use appropriate instructional strategies, activities, and materials that reflect an understanding of various learning styles
Create lesson plans based on sound research-based methods of instruction
Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of adolescent students
Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits
Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing
Provide effective and supportive feedback to students and parents
Implement a classroom management style that aligns with the school’s mission and culture
Establish and maintain open communication with parents and students
Communicate and collaborate effectively with all stakeholders within the school community
Show proficiency with Google Suite for Education productivity tools
Integrate technology into the curriculum to strengthen the teaching/learning process
Attend annual grade-level class trip (typically three to four days)
Serve as an advisor to a group of students; mentor and follow the students’ academic progress
Participate in school events and community service projects
Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills
Fulfill other duties as requested
Bachelor’s degree in a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
Teaching certificate preferred
Minimum of three years of experience teaching English Language Arts to middle or high school students
Experience using literacy strategies to build and assess student reading comprehension skills, word knowledge, reading fluency, written comprehension skills, and critical thinking
Knowledge of adolescent development
Knowledge of research-based practices for effective middle school instruction
