The National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) is seeking a Chief Program Officer (CPO) to begin on July 1, 2019. The CPO will lead and oversee the association’s professional development, academic, and formation programs in support of Catholic school education in the United States. NCEA provides professional development, leadership and advocacy to 6,300 Catholic school communities in the United States. Founded in 1904, NCEA is the largest, private professional education association in the world serving over 150,000 Catholic school educators who in turn serve almost 1.8 million students, K-12. The association engages approximately 30 full time staff and has an annual budget of $7,000,000.
The CPO is a senior position with the organization. The CPO will provide vision and oversight of NCEA’s programs that provide direct support to Catholic schools and diocesan offices in the areas of leadership formation, professional development, faith formation, assessment, curriculum, and regional events. The CPO reports to the president/CEO, and is part of a four person senior leadership team including the president/CEO, chief advancement and business development officer, and chief administrative officer. Broad responsibilities include:
Oversight of the NCEA National Standards and Benchmarks Council (NNC), and related programs;
Vision-setting and implementation of leadership development programs supporting Catholic schools and dioceses, integrating workshop programs, online learning, written resources and regional offerings;
Responsibility for NCEA’s academic and faith resources for schools/dioceses, including content production, identifying (and sharing) best practices and special programs;
Design of the annual superintendents Catholic Leadership Summit (and Academy); support regional superintendents gatherings, and provide resources and consultation to diocesan offices as needed;
Collaboration with Catholic Higher Education Supporting Catholic Schools (CHESCS) on research and programs to help Catholic schools, especially research on school academic performance;
Oversight of ongoing professional development opportunities for current Catholic school teachers and leaders; responsible for content and programs of the annual NCEA Convention & Expo;
Leadership of NCEA webinar, assessment (ACRE/IFG), and educational resource/awards programs.
Candidate Background and Abilities:
The ideal candidate will have extensive leadership experience in Catholic schools, including system level/diocesan leadership; preference will be given to Catholic school superintendents. The successful candidate will be a strategic leader who is adept at leading a dedicated team of professional educators and working in partnership with universities and national agencies. Desired abilities include:
Public speaking, group presentation and facilitation skills;
Strategic planning and thinking that leads to action implementation and ongoing assessment; ability to creatively design programs, collaborate with partners and provide service to schools
Listening, writing and effective oral skills;
Integrity, faith, humility, mission-driven with a positive attitude.
Candidate Qualifications and Experience:
Master’s degree in education leadership (doctorate preferred);
At least 10 years of experience in Catholic education, including 5 years leadership experience at the system/diocesan level;
Specific experience in designing and implementing school leadership formation programs;
Experience with research and data-driven decision making;
Catholic, with an active faith life.
