Algebra and Mathematics at Mark Day School
Skills, understandings and attitudes developed throughout eighth grade include broad metacognitive skills, such as growth mindset, self-advocacy, time management, and collaboration, alongside specific content knowledge, understandings and skills associated with mathematics. Students take Algebra 1 over two years in grades seven and eight, and leave Mark Day School prepared for Algebra 2 and Geometry in their first year at area independent and public schools. Students learn to apply creative mathematical problem-solving in both theoretical and real-world contexts, persevere in solving novel problems by employing a variety of mathematical tools and strategies, communicate and critique mathematical thinking and reasoning, and collect and analyze data as well as apply mathematical models to make decisions.
Specific Role Description
This is a part-time role teaching one section of 8th Grade Algebra 1 to a group of approximately 12-15 students. The class meets three days a week, once for 45 minutes and twice for 75 minutes. In addition to class meeting times, the teacher would collaborate with a grade level 8th grade math colleague and attend some faculty meetings as appropriate.

Use available technology to enhance student learning, faculty collaboration and responsive communication. Technologies include: 1:1 laptops, Google Suite (mail, drive, calendar, and Google Classroom), SMART boards, and a variety of applications and learning management tools for assigning tasks, representing learning, and providing feedback.
Education, Experience and Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution
Relevant teaching experience with a minimum of two years preferred
Subject area knowledge in Algebra and mathematics
Proven cultural competence in a community committed to issues of diversity, equity and social justice.
Strong skills with initiative, follow through, organization, collaboration and communication.

In spring 2016 the school broke ground on a transformative campus project that includes renovation of the quad and amphitheater at the heart of the campus and the construction of a new Learning Commons and Creativity Lab.
