About the Initiative
Digital Promise, with support from the Verizon Foundation and Verizon Wireless, is partnering with 150, scaling to 250+, U.S. middle schools across the country to create innovative learning environments and fully document the process so others can learn from their experiences. With a goal to close the digital learning gap at a diverse array of low-income middle schools, this initiative will provide students with one-to-one access to mobile learning technology in the classroom and at home, educators with personalized professional development, and all participants with a national community of practice. There is a focus on engaging students and teachers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) during the course of the grant.
About the Position
The Deputy Director will be responsible for supporting the Executive Director in building capacity of the initiative and providing overall leadership to a team of highly skilled professional learning practitioners. The Deputy Director needs to be collaborative and fully immersed in the effective use of digital technologies in learning and have deep knowledge on an array of topics including professional learning, leadership, public relations and communications. This is an exciting opportunity to play an integral role in a national initiative that leverages technology in support of powerful teaching and learning.
Professional Learning Design, Team Leadership, Program Management, and School District Relations
Coordinate with the executive director to implement all aspects of the initiative
Directly manage the Digital Promise professional learning team that directly supports all schools
Collaborate with staff to evaluate all programs, identify areas for improvement and work with the team to achieve and maintain competency in all initiative areas
Participate in networking and outreach activities
Assist with the development and implementation of communications tools and strategies to promote the initiative
Support the development of updates and reports for funder
Represent Digital Promise and the VILs initiative in industry-group conferences, professional associations, and other public venues
Provide thought leadership around powerful use of emerging educational technologies
Professional Development Planning and Implementation
Work collaboratively with VILs staff and school leadership teams to support the implementation of strategic plans for professional development in a school, aligned to both Verizon Innovative Learning outcomes and school goals, leveraging technology and in school and out of school access
Work with school and district leadership to problem solve challenges related to the implementation of the initiative
Collaborate with VILs staff on the development and oversight of systems supporting the VILs initiative
Collaborate with VILs staff on the development and oversight of Professional Learning content provided to school personnel
Conduct multiple school visits (in-person and virtual) and virtual coaching for school and district leaders
Building Coaching Capacity
Collaborate with VILs staff on the development of Professional Learning experiences that build coaching capacity of full-time school-based instructional coaches
Track key performance indicators and metrics that measure progress towards the achievement of initiative goals. (increased student engagement, increased student and teacher proficiency with technology, increased academic achievement, increased interest in STEM subjects and careers)
Provide vital insights and reporting across the program for Verizon, Digital Promise, school leadership and others.
Work with VILs staff to plan and host virtual and in-person convenings for school leaders and teachers
Work with VILs staff on process development and improvement
Connect with colleagues in other Digital Promise initiatives to share best practices
Think, work and plan sequentially toward initiative outcomes, consistently managing multiple deadlines and needs of different stakeholders
Other duties as assigned
Approximately 40% domestic travel

10+ years public school teaching experience; middle school or high school; Title I school experience preferred; experience with 1:1 programs or schools preferred
7+ years in leadership roles in education or equivalent in nonprofit or foundation
Coaching teachers experience preferred
Experience working with district leadership on school-based professional development plans; experience with school level initiative implementation
Master’s degree or equivalent in Education, Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, or related field.
Experience coaching teachers in a school setting
Successful presentation/facilitation experience with adult learners
Basic understanding of school district technology environments and product deployment
Outstanding communication and influencing skills with all school district stakeholders
Ability to work effectively under pressure and demonstrate problem-solving skills, while maintaining diplomacy and professionalism.
Demonstrated ability to meet quantitative and qualitative objectives.
Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills.
Ability to clearly communicate and inspire others to consider how digital technology supports learning.
Ability to communicate and build relationships in multiple formats (virtual, multimedia, face-to-face, etc.).
Strong writing and analytical skills
Ability to work independently, prioritize and delegate, in a fast-paced environment and manage competing tasks, deadlines, requirements, and decisions.
