School One, a small, independent high school on the East Side of Providence, Rhode Island, seeks a full-time teacher and advisor within our math-science department. There is some flexibility about the classes to be taught, which could include biology, physics, environmental science, and/or any area within high school math. The teacher would be responsible for four classes of no more than fifteen students each as well as advising a group of no more than twelve students and collaborating on other aspects of the school’s program. All teachers meet weekly to collaborate on supporting students. Teachers have considerable flexibility to create their own curricula within the departments’ frameworks. This is a full-time ten-month per year position.
Founded in 1973, School One enrolls up to 100 students in an arts and writing intensive, college preparatory program. The school is highly personalized and characterized by small classes, nurturing relationships among staff members and students and an emphasis on respect for individual differences. Qualifications include but are not limited to •Bachelor’s degree in a math/science area with Rhode Island secondary math and/or science certification preferred. •Ability to establish a respectful rapport with adolescents. •Strong organizational and communication skills. •Ability to collaborate with coworkers and parents. Other crucial qualities include patience, creativity, a sense of humor, fondness for adolescents and their quirks, backbone, a strong work ethic and the ability to navigate between flexibility and standards in students’ best long term interests.
