Harvard-Westlake, a coed, independent school in Los Angeles serving nearly 1600 students in grades 7-12, seeks to hire an exceptional and highly qualified educator for a full-time Chinese teaching position in the World Languages Department at the Upper School (grades 10-12).
The successful candidate will have the demonstrated ability to deliver rich and effective lessons to teach the Chinese language and Chinese culture to a diverse group of students. The ideal candidate will have experience initiating, facilitating, and moderating classroom discussions in the target language to enhance students' social and academic language skill. Experience participating in team planning and demonstrated success developing lessons within a team model is essential. The World Languages Department seeks those committed to team teaching, innovation, and collegiality.

Summary of duties:
Teach multiple levels of Chinese Language and Culture courses, specifically levels 2 to Post-AP;
Prepare, coordinate and plan the curriculum with other members of the department and with the Middle School World Languages Department, as appropriate;
Monitor and evaluate students’ progress, prepare for parent meetings, complete progress reports, etc.;
Participate in regular, purposeful pedagogical meetings and professional development;
Participate actively in the life of the School through attendance at events, committee memberships and leadership of extracurricular activities.
Participation in the planning and organization of the Chinese New Year Luncheon, hosted by the Harvard-Westlake Chinese Cultural Club (CCC), is expected.
Summary of desired qualifications:
A Bachelor’s Degree in Chinese or in the teaching of Chinese, with native or near-native proficiency (Master’s Degree preferred);
Substantial experience teaching Chinese in a similar school setting;
Significant recent professional development;
Strong oral and written communication skills and a desire to work in a team-focused environment;
Willingness to contribute to school life and activities in additional ways beyond the classroom.
