Position description: In this full-time 6th grade head teaching position, you serve as a part of a talented and caring team of experts (e.g., supervisor, counselor, co-teacher, math and science specialists). This team provides support and insights as you provide well-paced, inquiry-based instruction that promotes thinking, learning and problem solving. The major responsibilities for this position are to teach language arts and either social studies or science to a class of 6 grade students at Benchmark School.
Specific responsibilities include: ? Planning and providing well-paced, explicit instruction within the context of a project- or inquiry-based instructional framework while gradually releasing responsibility to the students o Assessing student’s strengths and challenges and scaffolding instruction appropriately o Providing a warm, supportive environment which fosters respect for others o Establishing routines, maintaining consistent expectations, and employing effective management techniques o Helping students develop their social and emotional skills, self-knowledge, and executive functioning skills in addition to their conceptual, strategic knowledge ? Providing clear and timely communication with students, parents, and other staff members in a positive, professional manner ? Demonstrating an openness to learn, grow, and change in accordance with the educational philosophy of Benchmark School ? Actively pursuing professional growth and development through attendance at Benchmark inservices, professional reading, and involvement in other professional activities ? Participating in infrequent evening or weekend activities, including meetings, professional development or other school activities ? In cooperation with the supervisor, training the intern or co-teacher to plan instruction, write reports, hold conferences, etc. ? Advising students on academic matters as a mentor ? Qualifications: Key qualities include: ? Advanced degree preferred in Reading and Language Arts – Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in reading and language arts at the middle school level ? Pennsylvania public school certification or Private Academic School certification grades 6-8 ? Minimum of three years’ experience teaching language arts preferred ? Ability to work well with a team ? Effective communicator, both verbally and in writing, with colleagues and parents ? A role model for students Salary: Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.
