The Art Teacher will be responsible for developing in each student an interest in and the ability for creative expression in visual terms, using skills and techniques of artistic expression consistent with school guidelines; to develop aesthetic understandings and appreciations; to discover and develop passions and talents of students in the field of art.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND TASKS
Maintain an inspiring and appropriately equipped Art classroom.
Collaborate and create with a team of fellow artists and other core curriculum professionals for the enhancement of common artistic goals and educational experiences.
Plan, prepare and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active learning, using the Understanding by Design model of instruction.
Use relevant technology to support and differentiate instruction.
Include a variety of teaching methodologies including multiple modalities of instruction.
Manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing community norms that support core values and procedures.
Responsibilities inherent in teaching elementary aged children using developmentally appropriate curriculum and fostering positive social skills and community core values.
Work with the Grade Level Teams to discuss and plan activities and student progress.
Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.
Communicate effectively verbally, in writing and in person to foster a collegial relationship with all production coordinators and school personnel involved in events, programs, and productions.
Attend departmental meetings and participate collegially.
Adapt course of study and training methods to meet student's need and ability.
Help students develop language and skills to visually express themselves.
Teach a variety of media including painting, digital art, and multimedia art.
Encourage students to develop concepts of design, style, and aesthetics through the process of creating and discussing art.
Work with all faculty and teaching artists to develop and project the most positive working environment possible for the betterment of the team and for the students.
Ability to work occasional evenings to help with school happenings, support Arts events, coordinate with faculty/students on promotional materials for exhibitions and lectures.
Observe and evaluate student performance and development, providing timely feedback to students and their parents.
Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic and ability backgrounds.
Perform supervisory duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Three years of Art teaching experience, preferably in an independent school.
BFA or BA degree required in Art Education; MFA or MA degree preferred.
Must be an innovator, invigorator, and visionary in working to develop and evolve the Lower School Visual Arts Curriculum.
Must be able to work with other Arts professionals to align curriculum across divisions.
Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer, hand-held learning devices, and other office equipment, and reach with hands and arms.
Work in a fast-paced, stressful environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines and a varied and diverse array of contacts.
May work long hours for extended periods of time.
Be able to lift 20 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
Work in varied and extreme weather conditions, including extreme heat.

About Miami Country Day School
Miami Country Day School was founded in 1938 as a residential proprietary boarding school for boys through eighth grade and has evolved remarkably over the past 80 years. The School has become a coeducational, nonprofit, interdenominational school with approximately 1250 students in PK3 through grade 12 representing approximately 32 countries. The school’s first twelfth grade graduating class was in 1981.
