Theatre Arts Educator: Program Director/Acting Teacher The Jewish Community High School of the Bay needs an amazing Theatre Director and Acting Teacher like you beginning with the 2019−20 or 2020-21 school year. This position includes coordinating, and administering our well-developed high school theater program through classroom teaching, clubs, and oversight of all theatre productions.
As our lead Theater Arts Educator you will:
Direct and produce three main stage productions each year (Fall musical, Winter drama/new play, and Spring comedy)
Teach one or more sections of Acting and / or Playwriting with the ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners and adjust practices to meet the needs of all students
Serve as the faculty sponsor for International Thespian Society
Partner with College Counseling to prepare students for college auditions/college portfolios; write recommendations for awards and scholarships
Be directly involved creating and maintaining a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive environment
Be supported by an engaged Dean, Learning Specialists, and School Counselor to help you focus on your teaching
Work alongside colleagues who will both push you to be a better teacher and welcome your help in improving their teaching
Work with supportive administrators who encourage innovative teaching, expect professional growth, and embrace research based pedagogy
Support students and the JCHS community by engaging in life outside the classroom through activities such as club advising, student mentoring and attending school events and trips
As the Director/Producer of our theater productions, you will:
Propose scripts/productions appropriate for our wide community (students, parents, alums, faculty/staff, and neighbors), with plentiful opportunities to grow, develop & stretch our student performers, and align with the mission and values of our school. Selection of theater material will be largely in your hands, with input from others and final approval by the head of school
Manage production budgets
Interpret scripts/musical scores for blocking, staging, and character development
Manage auditions and call-backs to build casts
Develop a rehearsal calendar, including personnel, space, and equipment needs. This calendar will be built with the understanding that our performers are students first and therefore rehearsal time will be somewhat limited
Select, train and supervise 2-3 student Assistant Directors and student Production Stage Managers
Work closely with Production Stage Manager(s), Technical Director and Musical Director to manage company calendar, rehearsals and disseminate information
Attend technical rehearsals preparing and disseminating detailed production/rehearsal notes for the cast and for the creative and production teams
Attend all performances - preparing and disseminating performance notes to both cast and crew
Serve as the production designer (costume, set, props, sound, lights) as needed.
Oversee all marketing materials for productions and department in coordination with the Director of Marketing
Perform weekend (Sunday) and night responsibilities as required for productions, and events like Open Houses and Arts Evening
Minimum three years’ experience working as a Stage Director and Producer in youth theater
Strong interpersonal, team, and leadership skills; professionalism and flexibility in working with diverse constituent groups;
Knowledge of relevant health and safety guidelines legislation and procedures
Self-directed with proven ability to assume responsibility, work independently, and move work/projects to completion with minimal supervision
Strong working knowledge of Mac Operating System, MS Office and G Suite
Ability to lift/carry up to 25 pounds regularly, using proper lifting techniques
Ability to lift/carry between 25 and 50 pounds occasionally, using proper lifting techniques
Ability to sit, stand, stoop, walk, bend, twist, use hands to finger, reach with hands and arms, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, twist, push, balance, and climb a ladder (or other similar stepping aid) as needed
Ability to travel comfortably and safely around our campus as needed
Ability to read information in printed material and/or on a mobile device/laptop/computer screen
