Harvard-Westlake School seeks a new Head of Upper School to lead a dynamic community of faculty, staff, students, and parents beginning in July of 2020. Harvard-Westlake is a coeducational, independent day school serving 1600 students in grades 7-12 on two campuses in Los Angeles—one for the Middle School (grades 7-9) and one for the Upper School (grades 10-12).
The 1991 merger of Harvard School and Westlake School formed Harvard-Westlake, which has gained a national reputation for outstanding academic and extra-curricular achievement. While proud of its accomplishments, the school is focused on its recently renewed statement of mission: “Harvard-Westlake strives to be a diverse and inclusive community united by the joyful pursuit of educational excellence, living and learning with integrity, and purpose beyond ourselves.”
The Head of Upper School has direct responsibility for the 865 students on the Upper School campus, leading 180 full-time faculty and staff, including an administrative team of 10 department chairs, 9 deans/college counselors, 3 counselors, a learning specialist, a dean of students, and a dean of faculty and staff. The Head of Upper School also serves as a key member of the leadership team, working closely with other school leaders and the board of trustees while contributing meaningfully to efforts in admissions, advancement, finance, operations, and long-term planning.
Harvard-Westlake actively strives to be a diverse and inclusive community in its educational, admission, and employment practices. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin, age, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity and/or expression, disability, or any other characteristic. We seek candidates who demonstrate sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of community members; have an ability to work flexibly, independently, and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment with individuals from a diverse set of backgrounds; and have a capacity to serve as a model of openness, generosity, and acceptance.
Harvard-Westlake seeks a person with significant school leadership experience, inspiring interpersonal and communication skills, infectious optimism, conspicuous integrity, and a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion. Additionally, successful candidates will possess an understanding of independent school culture and best practices in teaching and learning, both of which will be necessary to implementing and managing ongoing changes to the curriculum and daily schedule.
