BB&N is seeking an Upper School English teacher, likely a full-time position. Responsibilities may include teaching four English classes: two sections of English 10, one of AP English 11, and one of English 12. All courses aim to develop students’ critical thinking, reading, and writing skills. Sophomore English focuses on the study of works representing diverse voices and various literary genres. Students read Macbeth, excerpts from the Bible, and Bulawayo's We Need New Names, for example. The junior- and senior-year courses explore a theme or genre and provide instruction in more advanced literary analysis, discussion, and critical writing. Additional responsibilities will vary according to current program need and new initiatives.
The ideal candidate should have excellent academic preparation, a strong background in the traditional, modern, and contemporary classics of British and American literature, an eagerness to include global literary works among the course texts, preferably a master’s degree in English and at least four years’ experience teaching both literature and writing at the high school level.
