The Walker School is a nonsectarian, co-educational independent day school serving three-year olds through twelfth grade in Marietta, Georgia. The school was founded in 1957 and currently enrolls approximately 900 students. Walker seeks an energetic and dedicated individual for an Upper School English position beginning with the 2020-21 school year. The ideal candidate will be capable of teaching a wide variety of courses, ranging from ninth to twelfth grade English, including Advanced Placement English courses. The teaching load is five sections with up to three preparations and total student contacts between75 and 90. Preference will be given to candidates interested in contributing to the full life of the school through coaching at the Upper School level or sponsoring major student organizations.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
Develop and prioritize short and long-term instructional objectives based on English curriculum.
Display strong pedagogical knowledge of level curriculum being taught.
Uses best practices in teaching and learning, focused on differentiated instruction, to design and deliver instruction.
Presents well-planned lessons with appropriate work within and outside of the classroom.
Maintains accurate and comprehensive records of each student’s performance and progress.
Maintains and directs the appropriate behavior of students.
Develops strong student relations and nurtures the whole student by effectively communicating through active listening and appropriate responses.
Demonstrates effective and timely verbal and written communication with parents pertaining to a student’s progress and needs as well as general information (through phone calls, emails, learning management system, conferences, and semester comments).
Maintains an organized, pleasant, and inviting environment that supports active learning.
Collaborates with colleagues in lesson planning as well as grade-level and school-wide goals.
Utilize scientifically researched effective instructional strategies and methods of providing information for students to acquire the learning.
Participates actively in professional learning opportunities and demonstrates a growth, not fixed, mindset toward learning.
Integrates technology into the curriculum in a meaningful way that is suitable to the age and needs of the students and subject matter being taught.
Maintain professional responsibilities and act as a role model.
Demonstrate punctuality to class, to assigned duties, and to other school activities.
Submit records, reports, and forms accurately and promptly.
Provide clear plans for substitute teachers.
Demonstrate a willingness to share ideas, methods, and materials.
Participates in associated duties such as carpool and chaperoning school events.
Additional responsibilities as assigned.
A Bachelor’s degree and classroom teaching experience is required. A Master’s degree or advanced course work is preferred.
Salary is dependent on experience and degrees earned and is commensurate with other independent schools in the area.
