The Overlake School seeks a full-time Upper School Computer Science Teacher for the 2020-21 school year.

The Overlake School Mathematics and Computer Science Department
We are a 12-person department comprised of teachers with 5 to over 25 years of teaching experience. We are excited to work with our students every day, to continuously refine our craft, and to live up to Overlake’s mission in our classrooms. We love teaching in a small liberal arts setting, where the mathematics and computer science program is a part of a well-rounded curriculum. We value our daily conversations on teaching, on mathematics and computer science, and on how we can better guide our students. We believe in getting our students to ask “why?” and not just expecting to be told “what.” We embrace our different backgrounds and approaches to mathematics education. We teach to and learn from our students, and we make mistakes and know that it’s part of the learning we model for our students. We respect our students and are proud to be a part of the Overlake community.
This opening is a full time upper school position, with the following major responsibilities:
Teach 4 sections of mathematics and/or computer science courses.
Exact course assignments will be determined based on the interests and expertise of the new teacher and departmental needs.
Expectations for teachers include providing regular feedback via frequent assessments, being available to help students one-on-one during study hall periods and office hours, communicating to students via our course management system (Canvas), and providing feedback to families via quarterly rubrics and reports.

Be a part of the school co-curricular program.
Clubs are student driven, and teachers play an advisory role.
Clubs meet twice every 8 day cycle. Typically, each teacher leads a club every quarter/semester.
Teachers also have the opportunity to and are encouraged to be trip leaders, coaches, or serve other non-academic leadership roles in the community.
Support the Overlake experiential education program as a project week leader.
Every year, Overlake students embark on weeklong (or sometimes longer) experiential education experiences during project week. Projects range from service trips to our sister school in Cambodia to learning sewing, scrapbooking, or Parkour.
All Overlake teachers lead or co-lead a project every year. New teachers often serve as co-leader in an established project with an experienced leader and develop and lead new projects in the following years.

We are looking for teachers who…
Have experience teaching people under the age of 25
Preferably, but not necessarily, with students in the 14 to 19 age range.
While Overlake classrooms lean towards a more traditional classroom setting, we welcome applicants with experience in other settings.
Demonstrate a history of an open and collaborative approach to teaching and learning.
All of our teachers work collaboratively with other department members on teaching and curriculum development.
There is a wide variety of skill and comfort levels in mathematics/computer science in our student body, and our teachers need to be fluent in differentiated instruction.
We have an established curriculum, but one we’re continuing to change. We want a teacher who can jump into existing courses and will ask “why are we doing it this way?” and work with the department to improve the program.
Possess a level of cultural competency necessary for working with a diverse population in an inclusive and equitable community.
We have a diverse student body, and we want all our teachers to have the skills necessary to ensure that their classrooms are safe, inclusive places for everyone.
We seek a CS teacher who is aware of the racial, socio-economic, gender, and other inequities present in CS education, and actively work to eliminate these in the classroom.
Can communicate well, both in writing and verbally, with colleagues, students, and families.
Much of our work involves clear, frequent communication with families on student progress, recommendations, and program information.
Model a culture of flexible, continuous learning for students.

New Overlake teachers do not need to come in as experts in the specific technologies or methods we currently use but should have the flexibility and ability to learn and improve on them.
