The Lower School Principal is the foremost leader of the Lower School and oversees all aspects of the division in pursuit of the mission. OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES: Administrative Leadership: - Ensure that all activities of the Lower School ultimately center on the mission of the school.
- Function as the chief articulator of the Lower School programs, expectations, behavioral guidelines, and other information necessary to ensure that all constituencies are fully informed consistent with their individual
- Provide an orderly, controlled environment in which learning can take place, a school climate which is supportive and reflective of the Christian
- Be aware of the educational, physical, social, and psychological needs of the division members, and develop plans for meeting these
- Conduct regular meetings with faculty, covering both routine school matters and the stimulating exchange of ideas on issues of educational/philosophical interest and concern.
- Collaborate with the Assistant Headmaster and other administrators to establish programs for the orientation of new teachers, for in-service training of all teachers, and for the evaluation of classroom teachers, to ensure that teachers are familiar with and adhere to school policies in all areas of the school’s
- Be a visible presence in all relevant areas of the school (classrooms, dining hall, playground, hallways, ).
- Work toward a positive resolution of all problems - both routine and unique - as they
- Keep the appropriate members of the administrative team informed of the general programs, activities, and problems of the
- Oversee the various division events throughout the school year and collaborate with faculty and staff on format for assemblies, chapel and other division-wide
- Manage morning and afternoon carpool with assistance from faculty and staff.
- Work with the registrar to create a daily schedule for the Lower school and assign teachers to other non-academic duties (i.e., lunch duty, carpool duty, etc.)
- Serve as a mentor and guide to teachers in matters of classroom management, teaching methods, and general school procedures.
- Strive for unity and cooperation through tact, helpfulness, respect and recognition of individual differences and the special abilities and strengths of each teacher.
- Manage class placement process with feedback from faculty and staff.
- Assist in the admission process for the testing, interviewing and evaluating of student applicants for enrollment.
- Oversee summer purchases of supplies and instructional materials and any yearly changes to Lower School uniforms.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Headmaster of Academic Affairs.
Academic Leadership: - Act as the educational leader of the Lower School, responsible for its day-to-day operation; direct the activities of the members of the school instructional staff and, in conjunction with the business office, the non-instructional staff in the performance of their
- Observe, supervise, and help evaluate the faculty in the development and implementation of curriculum, in collaboration with the Assistant Headmaster and Academic Dean; supervise the teaching process and review and evaluate the academic
- Uphold and enforce the academic policies of the Lower School and participate on the Academic Council in the articulation of the school’s mission, goals, course objectives, materials, methods, and means of
- Provide guidance and support to faculty mentors and equip them to grow as leaders within the
- Provide for the academic guidance of
- Work with the Assistant Headmaster and Academic Dean regarding the hiring, retention and assignment of faculty.
- Collaborate with faculty mentors on academic and professional development needs of the Lower
- Work with the Registrar to maintain complete academic records on all
- Oversee the grading and the reporting of standards and methods used by teachers in measuring student achievement. Work with faculty and staff on review of report card grades and
Student Life/Discipline: - Demonstrate a positive demeanor and participate enthusiastically in division activities and
- Work with the faculty and staff to establish guidelines for classroom discipline and appropriate consequences and communication
- Work with the school counselor, school nurse, faculty, and parents to identify student concerns and map out necessary interventions, guidelines, and strategies towards effective
- Collaborate with Dean of Student Affairs, student leaders, and division principals to plan school-wide co-curricular
- Assist in maintaining a comprehensive calendar of school events; keep the division’s community informed of various school programs and activities.
- Ensure the daily safety of all faculty and students within the Lower School, primarily by serving as a member of the school-wide crisis team; help to develop a master calendar of drills; assist in the running of regular meetings and required drills (i.e., weather, fire and lockdown) throughout the academic year; advise all Lower School faculty and staff on their role during these drills.
