Position: SPA seeks candidates for the position of Middle School Social Studies Teacher.
Position Begins: August 2020 Status: Full-time, Exempt Department: Instructional, Middle School
Job Description: Successful candidates should possess the ability to teach Social Studies at the middle school level (grades 6-8) and have a strong background in the Humanities. The primary assignment of the Middle School Social Studies Teacher will be to teach four Middle School courses in social studies and to act as an advisor to a group of Middle School students. The successful candidate will have experience guiding students through content, research, and analysis which emphasizes critical thinking and will be able to teach and conduct discussions in a student-centered way. We seek a candidate who has a demonstrated passion for the humanities and a track record leveraging this passion into effective practices that encourage students to think creatively, engage with ideas deeply, and lead with intellectual curiosity. Collaboration across disciplines and within the social studies department is essential for the success of the teacher as well as the program. The ability to also teach a class of English using workshop pedagogy preferred.
Additional responsibilities include: management and oversight of students throughout the day (including recess and quiet study periods), chaperoning of various events throughout the school year, participation in after-school events and overnight trips as assigned, participation in faculty meetings and forums, documentation and development of curriculum, and reporting to families. Demonstrated experience working with adolescents is essential, as are excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Strong candidates will have experience teaching full time in a Middle School environment.
All candidates should be able to advise students effectively and otherwise contribute to the life of the school outside the classroom. Training and experience in Developmental Designs for Middle School preferred. All candidates are expected to carry out the mission of SPA, "Shaping the minds and hearts of the people who will change the world," and to contribute to the life of the school outside of their primary duties and responsibilities.
