Bentley School, an independent K-12 school in Oakland and Lafayette, California, seeks a full-time Visual Art teacher at the Upper School campus in Lafayette. Candidates should be able and eager to teach introductory and advanced courses in the Visual and Performing Arts Department. The Visual and Performing Arts Department at Bentley is an innovative, collaborative group that seeks a candidate to complement the strengths of the department, and to add his or her own expertise and background to the core curriculum. Job Summary: This position will include, but is not limited to:
Teaching four sections of visual art, leading an advisory group, and participating in aspects of student life at Bentley like advising clubs, coaching, or working with student organizations.
Desire and capacity to teach the ninth grade Introduction to Visual Art course, Drawing and Painting electives, AP Art and Design, and AP Art History. The chosen candidate may have the opportunity to teach visual art in their discipline of expertise.
Commitment to guiding the development of students’ visual communication, artistic expression, critical thought, contextual realization, self-reflection, and time management skills.
Ability and willingness to work with students in large and small group settings using multiple teaching methods to reach a broad range of students.
Research and enter local art competitions, display student work around the campus, and support students’ engagement in artistic opportunities outside of the classroom.
Advanced degree in visual art or art education
Extensive knowledge and practice in art and art education
A passion for working with young people
Experience in an interdisciplinary environment with an emphasis on group collaboration and use of technology
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Experience working with high school and/or college age students in an academic setting
Experience in course design, planning, and implementation
The willingness to approach learning new skills in flexible and creative ways
