The SMITHTOWN CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT, located on Long Island in western Suffolk County, New York, is seeking a Superintendent of Schools.
The 8,700 students in the Smithtown Central School District are enrolled in seven elementary schools,
3 middle schools and two high schools. The school district’s budget for 2019-2020 is approximately $250 million. The district has a long tradition of high-achieving students and the community is very supportive of the school district and its students. Stakeholders are committed to excellence, to a student-centered philosophy, and to enhancing an already successful school district and community.
The Board of Education is seeking a leader who can build upon the district’s many accomplishments while respecting the school and community cultures and its student-centered vision.
Among the many hallmarks of the Smithtown Central School District recently cited by staff, parents, students, and members of the community were:

A large district which has multiple offerings/services for students;
Dedicated staff members who work collaboratively to do what is best for students;

Some of the major leadership challenges for the new superintendent, also cited by staff and residents are:
Helping facilitate the work of a committee investigating the possible closing of school buildings due to declining enrollment;
Addressing a growth in student mental health issues; and
Working in an environment in which stakeholders perceive an excessive amount of superintendent turnover.
Following significant staff and community engagement, the Smithtown Board of Education has approved the following specifications for its search for a new superintendent:
The successful candidate will be:
A professional administrator of great integrity, who utilizes a transparent and collaborative approach to planning and decision making;
A compassionate educator who truly cares about students and consistently bases decisions on what is in their best interest;
An approachable and accessible leader, with a good sense of humor, who regularly attends school and community activities;
An experienced school leader, with preference for those with proven success as a classroom teacher, building principal, and central level director or administrator;
An experienced educator who has provided effective instructional leadership in a high-expectation school district similar to Smithtown; and
An administrator with proven skills in business, finance and facility planning.
he Board of Education is offering a regionally-competitive compensation package. New York State certification as a School District Administrator or School District Leader is required for appointment.
