Job Title: Middle School History Teacher
Division: Middle School
Reports to: Head of Middle School and Chair of the History Department
The Middle School History Department at King seeks a dynamic, full-time, History teacher to begin in the 2020-2021 year. This teacher will assume duties and responsibilities, consistent with expectations for all Middle School teachers, which consists of the primary teaching load of four sections and at least one activity.
Teach 4 sections of 6th Grade History - 20th Century Global Perspectives.
Intense focus on developing students’ reading, writing and critical analysis skills.
Serve as a 6th Grade Advisor:
Responsibilities include advocating for the students, communicating with parents about advisees’ progress, guiding advisees through daily school life, sharing information and leading discussions.
Attend regular meetings for Grade 6 with student support teams to discuss concerns and progress.
Collaborate with the 6th Grade English teacher and 7th and 8th Grade History teachers to coordinate a clear scope and sequence from grade to grade in terms of both subject matter and skill development.
Collaborates with the Director of Teaching and Learning, Middle School Dean of Students, and School Counselors when appropriate to ensure students are being fully supported and challenged.
Participate in all required meetings.
Perform other supervisory duties as required of all Middle School teachers - recess and snack, lunch, study hall, morning greeting, etc.
Communicate with parents/guardians about student and advisee progress as necessary.
Skills and Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in a humanities field, including but not limited to history, literature, ethnic studies, multidisciplinary programs, with strong disciplinary knowledge of history.
Strong skills in reading and writing instruction.
Possess a sound understanding of the developmental stages of middle school students.
Ability and willingness to facilitate differentiated, student-centered best practices.
Ability and willingness to encourage student discovery and autonomy of thought.
Capacity to collaborate with colleagues across history and English to build an integrated humanities curriculum.
Competence in topics of global studies and education for social justice preferred.
The candidate should be organized and able to manage a series of student information platforms and systems, including: Google Classroom, Gmail.
