Manhattan Country School is seeking an experienced middle school science teacher to teach 6th through 8th graders a progressive, lab-based curriculum with a social justice lens.
The Upper School science curriculum focuses on providing experiences and teaching skills for inquiry-based science education rooted in the scientific method. The Next Generation Science Standards are a guideline for curriculum development, as is a focus on STEM. Seminar classes in 7th and 8th grades explore science-related topics, such as environmental mapping and equity or coding with Lego Mindstorm robots. The Upper School science teacher also works closely with the Lower School science and Farm teachers to shape a program that fosters children’s connections to nature and supports sustainability initiatives consistent with our mission.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Upper School science teacher
teaches 6th grade earth science and 7th/8th grade life and physical science to about 60 students
advises students and communicates with families, including writing reports and leading conferences
accompanies students on one 1-week trip to our Catskills farm
teaches 6th-8th grade electives
fulfills other various duties, including lunch and park coverage
collaborates with the 7th and 8th grade team on sustaining a dynamic program and developing interdisciplinary collaborations, including the 7th and 8th grade activism project
thinks about the visibility of the science program for MCS families and the wider community
Full-time teaching experience
Masters degree in science or science education preferred
Strong knowledge of child development and progressive education
Provide examples of innovative pedagogy to promote inquiry and learning in adolescents and evidence of capable writing
Command a range of teaching methods to meet different learning needs
Integrate technology, including Excel, Google applications, laptops/ipads, projectors, etc.
Work closely with a dedicated team of teachers, the learning specialists and math coordinator, and the Upper School director
Self-starter, take initiative, have a sense of humor, and demonstrate strong listening and communication skills
Familiarity with engineering and coding and/or Mindstorm robotics a plus
Prior experience in a diverse community or working collaboratively to engage youth in community-building, social and environmental justice, and activism is a plus
