St. Mark’s School of Texas is seeking a creative and energetic Mandarin Chinese teacher beginning in the 2020-21 school year. Strong candidates will possess native or near-native proficiency in Chinese, an in-depth knowledge of Chinese culture, and experience teaching middle and/or high school students. They should also be skilled in the integration of technology as a tool to advance student learning. The successful applicant will be willing to work as part of a team to contribute to and enhance the School’s rigorous Mandarin curriculum, which spans grades five through twelve. Likewise, he or she will demonstrate a commitment to character and leadership education for all students, giving equal priority to their character and intellectual development.
Teaching Mandarin Chinese to students in grades 5-12
Serving as an Advisor to a small group of students
Contributing to the broader community by participating in the wilderness program, club program, or athletic program, depending on experience
Participating in the character and leadership education program
Experience / Qualifications & Skills
A master’s degree in Chinese is preferred. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree in Chinese will also be considered, as will native speakers with degrees in other fields who have significant experience as middle and/or high school Chinese teachers.
Three or more years of teaching Chinese to non-heritage students in middle and/or high school. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in and enthusiasm for teaching both middle and upper school Mandarin courses, including AP Chinese. Independent school experience is a plus.
Native or near-native proficiency in English and in Mandarin Chinese. Strong oral and written communication skills are required in both languages.
Knowledge of varied teaching strategies to differentiate learning
Fluency with a variety of technology tools to advance learning
