Greenwich Country Day School seeksa Lower Elementary School Science and Sustainability Teacher, Grades N-2, to start August 2020. The specialist teacher will teach science to students in grades 1 and 2, collaborate with colleagues to support integrating science with homeroom curricular units, and work with co-teachers to provide support in lesson planning. The Science and Sustainability teacher will act as a resource for all students and adults in the Lower Elementary school community to provide an articulated and aligned sustainability program. The ideal candidate will have a passion for science, STEAM, and sustainability, and for working with lower elementary-aged students. The lower elementary science program incorporates animals into its life science program. The care of the science house animals will be an important part of this position.

Collaboration with homeroom and learning specialist teachers, and school psychologist to understand and support individual students’ learning needs
Oversight of the progress of each child in the subject area
Oversight of the Lower Elementary Science curriculum and ability to lead change in curriculum, program, or pedagogical approach, as needed
Assessment of all students’ progress in both written and verbal reports
Communication with parents
Devise, lead, and present sustainability initiatives and ongoing programs within the division
Collaborate with sustainability leaders in other divisions and in the broader community
Collaborate with colleagues on grade level and interdisciplinary faculty teams, Lower Elementary faculty and staff, and the broader school community
Supervision of students during recess, lunch, arrival, and dismissal as requested by Division Head
Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree
A minimum of 3-years successful classroom teaching experience with students in this age group, or demonstrated professional competency
Entrepreneurial mindset and approach to building a program beyond the current scope
Demonstrated experience facilitating professional development for faculty
A passion for learning and the ability to motivate and inspire students
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Commitment to building a diverse, equitable and inclusive school community
Willingness to take on multiple roles within the division
Personal traits appropriate for nurturing the growth of young children - must be energetic, creative, flexible, patient, and have an inexhaustible sense of humor
Demonstrates an understanding of animals and is committed to caring for the variety of animals in the Science House
Advanced degree and/or professional experience within your discipline/area of practice
Demonstrated experience devising and leading STEAM and sustainability initiatives
Demonstrated experience in establishing collaborative relationships with external partners/organizations in the design and implementation of learning experiences
Demonstrated experience in working as part of a department or grade level team
