Lakeside School, an independent 5-12 coeducational day school located in North Seattle is currently recruiting for a middle school science teacher beginning in the 2020-21 school year. This will be a full-time, school-year faculty appointment. At Lakeside School, we are committed to academic excellence, diversity, and global citizenship.
Responsibilities Lakeside School’s Middle School science teachers are a collaborative team. Across the four grades, the curriculum includes physics, chemistry, life science, climate change, global topics, and engineering. The latter two occur at every grade level. Lakeside is re-envisioning our 5-12 curriculum and assessment so more interdisciplinary, self-directed, and competency-based projects are likely in the future. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic scientist who is interested in curriculum development, innovative pedagogy, collaborative teaching and working with highly motivated young students. Specific responsibilities for this position are to:
Teach four sections of science (grade level TBD). Class section size is 16-18 students. Each class meets 2 out of every 3 days.
Provide academic support for students outside of class time as needed (e.g., answer homework questions via email, provide extra help during lunch or study hall).
Collaborate actively with colleagues on innovative curriculum development, pedagogy, and assessment. Department emphasis is placed on encouraging students to develop good scientific habits of mind and critical thinking skills.
Attend science department meetings (one per week), faculty meetings (every Tuesday afternoon), and be an advisor to a small group of students (daily).
Participate in the life of the school community, including experiential parts of our program such as outdoor trips and service learning days.
Requirements and Qualifications
Have experience teaching middle school, high school or college students.
Have a demonstrated interest in educating adolescents, in or out of the classroom.
Be flexible and have a sense of humor (seriously, it’s middle school)!
Be able to work with students who vary in their ability and learning styles.
Have experience instructing a diverse student population (race, gender, religion, politics, etc.).
Demonstrated cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the cultural lenses they bring to interactions. The candidate will understand different perspectives; interact respectfully with cultures other than their own; and cultivate meaningful relationships with people that have different cultural frameworks.
Be comfortable using a PC/Windows platform computer.
Possess a bachelor’s degree (or higher) in science or a related field.
Provide references who will speak to excellent collaborative skills and an ability to be both a leader and a follower.
Candidates must satisfactorily complete two criminal background checks.
Compensation and Benefits Lakeside School is committed to attracting and retaining outstanding faculty candidates who will add to the racial, cultural, economic and gender diversity of our school community. This position will be compensated based on education and years of experience per the Lakeside School salary scale. Substitutes are not eligible for benefits other than FICA, workers compensation insurance and a school-provided lunch.
