Lower School Associate Teacher Full-Time Beginning Late August 2020
Reports to: Lower School Associate Teacher FLSA: Exempt Date Posted: January 31, 2020
The Associate Teacher Program in the Lower School is a two-year teacher-training program designed for college graduates pursuing a career in teaching. Associate Teachers have the option to apply for a third year in a different grade level.
The principal role of the Associate Teacher is to assist the Head Teacher in all aspects of classroom life. Associate Teachers participate in classroom management, curriculum design, and instruction. Associate Teachers are expected to support classroom teachers with lesson and project preparation and to work with students in small groups as well as one-to-one. Associate Teachers have opportunities to teach whole-class lessons throughout their time at Sacred Heart and to develop an extensive unit in their second year. If the Head Teacher is absent, the Associate Teacher assumes the role of Head Teacher.
While Head Teachers are ultimately responsible for the academic program, parent conferences, and assume primary accountability for reporting on the growth, learning style, and behavior of the students, Associate Teachers are expected to share in these responsibilities by playing a supportive role.
The Associate Teacher will share routine tasks with the Head Teacher and will have additional responsibilities, which include supervising at lunch and recess times, escorting children to and from specialty classes, and bus duty dismissal.
Associate Teachers are an important part of the faculty and, as such, attend faculty and grade-level meetings as well as professional development days.
The liaison for the Associate Teacher is the Head of the Mentoring Program. Associate Teachers will meet regularly with the Head of the Mentoring Program to discuss their progress as they begin teaching in the classroom and collaborating with their Head Teacher. This is an opportunity for regular in-house professional development. The Head of the Mentoring Program will also meet with the Head Teachers to discuss the progress of the Associate Teachers. At the end of the first year, the Associate Teacher may be given more classroom responsibility at the discretion of the Head Teacher.
